The Inspection
So... I think the inspection guy summed it up best when he said that he's the bearer of bad news. He said that after he gets through his spiel of everything wrong with the house that you wonder why you ever even decided to move in the first place.
He was very humorous and light in tone - which I appreciated. Not something you'd really expect from an inspector.
I'll start from the beginning.
Jeremy picked me up from work at 12:30ish. We ate lunch at Queen of Sheba - an Ethiopian restaurant - And, yes, Ethiopians do in fact eat. The food was kind of like Indian in the spices and flavor. The method of eating it was interesting - you use no utensils and pick up your food with a pancake like bread called injera. It was good but a little pricey for what we got. I would've been just as satisfied, if not more, with a delicious Indian buffet.
So after we ate we stopped by the warehouse to check out the table - you know that story already.
Then we headed straight over to the house. The selling Realtor, our Realtor (the wonderful Chris George), and the inspectors were there checking out the house. The selling Realtor is the mother of the owner of the house. That was nice because we got to learn some things about the neighbors. For example, the house directly East of us has been vacant for 12 years! Apparently the mom (Realtor) of the owner has called the owner of that house about 30 times over the past decade to see if he would be interested in selling - apparently they are not.
We also learned that the owner of the house tiled over the original tile in the bathroom and my heart broke a little bit. We'll see if it's salvageable.
Anyways, the inspector said that the two biggest problems in the house are the cracked furnace that needs to be replaced (apx. $2000) and 4 piers need to be added to the house to keep it stable and prevent any further shifting (apx. $450 each). So now we're in the negotiating process and I won't blog about it too much in case the owners of the house happen to find this blog. Ha!
I'll leave you with a picture.

Ughhh to inspections. I'm dreading ours. For what it's worth, the house we're in now had to have more piers put in when we bought it three years ago. It was no big deal, and I think the sellers paid for it.
Hooray for your blog -- I really enjoyed reading it and all your plans for your new house. So much fun!
