Liz's First Home: Kitchen Inspiration

Sometimes when it's slow here at work (NOT today) Liz and I will trade links and commentary on really inspiring interior design trends making the blog rounds. One of those trends: open kitchen shelving. If anyone can pull it off it's Liz.
For reference, here is Liz's kitchen:
Desire to Inspire (my interior design inspiration go-to) conveniently did a huge post yesterday on open kitchen shelving.
Some of my favorites from that post:
This one makes my heart hurt it's so perfect. The contrast of amazing stainless steel appliances with weathered walls. GAH. And the mix of framed art with cooking utensils.
What I really like about this kitchen is how unpretentious it is. It's not trying to be anything it's not but that makes it cozy and just right. This one especially reminded me of Liz's kitchen and the things she can do to make-do with what she's got (for now).
The way all the dishes are organized in this photo make me think of Liz's things. The jars, wine glasses, white dishes... This image also reminds me of my stainless steel vs. white drama - remember? Though stainless steel is more desirable I think white would've been nice in this kitchen.
P.S. We went with white but went through the hassle of having gas installed.
What do you guys think of open kitchen shelving? Have you recently remodeled your kitchen? Or given it a mini-makeover? Tips, ideas, discuss!

I love open shelving... something about it is just so much more inviting and 'lived in'... plus it's a great reason to have fabulous dishes :)
we didn't remodeled, but we did make big changes with wallpaper removal and paint in our current kitchen. maybe someday we can do a full remodel! we removed one upper cabinet and replaced it with open shelves and added some additional open shelves along another wall. i don't have a good current picture, but this is what it looked like soon after we finished: http://five2eight.blogspot.com/2008/12/every-weekend-should-be-3-day-weekend.html
we've since bought some white dishes that we use everyday and keep those on the shelves by the window above the dishwasher. this works out really well because we use them often enough they don't get dusty. our wine glasses and some of the other things like that on the longer shelves do get dusty, but that's my only negative. otherwise i love having shelves! they make the space seem a lot more open and i like that it makes the kitchen have more of a personality even when in reality it is just everyday kitchen stuff. plus i like having all of my cookbooks in the kitchen.
I love open shelving! I can't wait to see what she does with her kitchen. Please, come by. I really need your help.
thanks for the nice comments :-) i'm always amazed at what paint can do!
i think these are all gorgeous. open shelving can work, but it has to be kept "just so" all the time, or it starts to look messy...kinda like living in a studio apartment.
