Designing an Outfit

I know, I know. Outfits belong over there and everything else belongs here. But this is a blog that centers around design and life and I think it is fair to have a conversation about designing an outfit.

Set2
These are some of the top viewed outfits on my flickr page.

A lot like interior design or graphic design when I think about an outfit I think about the following:
Tone and feel - what is the message I want to convey? professional or whimsy? sweet or tough?
Composition and Proportions - baggy vs. tight, chunky top with short shorts?
Color - pop of color? monochromatic? offensive clashing shades of green?
Pattern and Texture - plaid on plaid? yes, please!
Accessories - accessories can supplement an outfit or be the statement
Hair and Makeup - like accessories, it can make a statement or they can let the outfit do the talking

Set1
Outfits from this week. Feminine tops paired with ties and menswear inspired trousers.

I don't think I have the best style or sometimes I take risks and don't always make the right choices. But I do have a point of view - I'm making a statement about who I am and what I'm about - even if just for a day. The way I dress affects the way I carry myself - the same way the interior design of a room can affect my attitude.

I also married a very stylish and creative man who doesn't take himself, or what he wears, too seriously. He inspires me daily.

And like interior or graphic design my inspiration comes from many different sources. I'll name a few:
LookBook
Flickr's Wardrobe Remix
The Sartorialist
LookBook
Uno Cosa
Jane Aldridge at Sea of Shoes (and her mom)
Rachel Zoe and her team

oh! Kathleen ... i got to say that this post make me smiling ... funny enough that i was having a conversation with velizar this morning about my choice of daily wardrobe ... i totally agree about the part to have "a point of view" - this is more important than anything else and it is that we shall be apart from the rest ... we are not seeking perfection; perfection is for robot; what we see is a reflection of how we feel and hope that our own individual uniqueness will be carried through via the way we dress .... oh! btw: i just saw your list of inspirations :-) ... how i am honored!!! xx

The plaid outfit here is my fave Kathleen outfit! The other three are a close second!

Love this post and I love your style. I wish I could be more daring with my own style. I'd love to cut my hair into a style similar to yours, but don't think I could pull something like that off. Any tips for making style changes when you're a little scared? Thanks!

i love that third outfit you posted! you have great hair for styling, and your clothes are so darling. i'm so happy you put sea of shoes on your list of favorite inspirations... jane has an impeccable style that i've always wanted to posess!

great post, menswear with feminine tops are some of my favorites to wear and those are great trousers.
