Tools for Cooking and When Did This Become Such a Food Blog?

I picked up this rolling pin at the farmer's market this weekend - it's hand-made by a 93 year old man whose wife insists he keep busy by making wooden rolling pins. I love it.

I am slowly building a collection of tools needed for cooking. My cast iron pan has changed my life. I recently picked up some spring form cake pans in various sizes.

Some other tools on my list:
• measuring scale (for those European recipes)
• grater (for cheese, rinds, whatnot)
• a really nice knife
• a large wood cutting board
• porcelain / ceramic bread pan
• pasta attachment for the mixer
• copper (and/or stainless steel) pots and pans (slowly but surely I want to replace our nonstick pots and pans)

Any other tools that I shouldn't live without that I don't know about yet?

Homemade pizza (using this dough recipe) with olive oil and garlic sauce, local mushrooms, local spinach, apples, fresh mozzarella, goat cheese, and topped with Parmesan.

Reading this book coupled with an evolving outlook on the food I eat has led me to spending more time with the food I make. I've never been much of a cook but it is now a hobby I've taken on full-force. There are times when I prefer the food I make over some of my favorite restaurants. Life is happening between eating and I'm really, truly enjoying it.

I'd add a solid 5 or 6 qt dutch oven, good tongs, and a couple of commercial jelly roll pans to the list. (I don't know if City Restaurant Supply is still around? When I still lived in town they were an awesome resource for well-priced commercial grade kitchen tools.) I use my thermapen more than is probably legal, too.

Also, not a tool, but a couple of books: Michael Ruhlman's Ratio and Karen Page's Flavor Bible are both outstanding and worth every penny.

I need to get a heavy duty vegetable peeler. Since becoming vegan, I use this thing ever night! The one I had was pretty old so it died fairly quickly.

I also want a pressure cooker but that is way down on the list.

that rolling pin is amazing! Thank you for getting so into food and the healthier outlook you're sharing, it's really inspiring! ox

never underestimate a good knife when if comes to cooking! A garlic press is great too, for keeping your skin free of the stench.

You guys are the best. I'm adding all of these. OH! And a solid food processor.

Definitely a cast iron dutch oven...I like the Staub because it can go from the stove to the oven with no problem.

You could be a food photographer, I swear! I want to eat that pizza right off my computer screen!
This is silly, but recently my mom bought me a butter bell, because I always complain my refrigerated butter is too hard to spread on toast! I am obsessed with it! So old fashioned, and so handy dandy! xx

Agreed with the dutch oven comments up there; I'd also add a cast iron skillet, because it will literally last you forever and be passed down to your great grandkids. And it leeches iron into your food, and this is brilliant for women since we lose so much iron every month!

And yes! Get that food scale, I didn't think I'd use it as much as I actually do!

the cooking tool which has changed my life in the last month is a pressure cooker.

pea soup? 6 minutes to cook from scratch with dried peas
risotto from scratch? 5 minutes of cooking
lentils and sweet potatoes (again from dried beans)? 9 minutes.

seriously, i dont know why one would ever cook without one (well, except for things like pizza)

Combine it with "Vegetarian cooking under pressure", it will change your life too

I'm adding my 2 cents for the cast iron Dutch oven. I have 2 Le Creusets, and I am obsessed. I would also like a Le Creuset braiser, and then I think I could honestly get rid of every other (nonstick or other) pot and pan I own and be totally satisfied. That's how good they are. I leave mine out on the stove top because I use them every day; no use in putting them away once they've been cleaned.

A big Santoku-style knife is my personal preference, when it comes to knives. I almost never use a small knife anymore.

Wait wait wait. You don't have a food processor?! Oh crap, stop the presses. DEFINITELY add that to your list. You will be in love. When I got mine, I also got a couple of food proc cookbooks, like the "FOod Processor Bible" to help me fully realize its potential. It makes EVERYTHING a snap.

I love that your blog is slowly becoming a food blog, all of your food always looks so delicious. That pizza! Mmm.

oh, and a large bamboo cutting board is definitely on my list, too!

Ditto the dutch oven! Cooksillistrated.com has great reviews of kitchen goodies.

You might want to buy a giant stock pot at some point if you want to get really wild and crazy and can your own produce or make stock.

My friend and I were talking the other day about how great it would be if you could just rent kitchen stuff you only need a few times a year, like an ice cream maker and canning equipment. I want a kitchen tools library!

cooking is nothing new to me and i've had a very well-stocked kitchen with the exception of a mandoline. i finally caved and spent about $70 on one a few months ago. it is fantastic for slicing, especially ultra-thin for pickling vegetables.
