How I Became A Cat Person

If you've been reading this blog for a while you know that I am NOT a cat person. You know that Jeremy already had two kitties when we got together and I set some ground rules when we moved in together. First and foremost, I never wanted to smell the cat box. I also voiced my concerns regarding cat hair and scratching. So now Jeremy cleans out the cat box twice a day, we Soft Paw the cats, and I've learned that cat hair is inevitable. There is nothing you can do about it.
Slowly, but surely, I began to love these little guys.

Jeremy and Mister Boots have a love-fest every morning. Boots follows Jeremy everywhere and they cuddle in the bathroom for a good 5 minutes. And every morning Boots gets what we call "butter face" from all the loving.

I knew I became a cat person, for reals, when I would excitedly point out kitties hiding under bushes while driving from point A to point B. And then, again, when I started buying our cats things. Like cute little houses.

They're still learning how to share.

Butterface... : )!
I used to have cats growing up and loved their personalities. I developped a crazy allergy to cat dander about 10 years ago and I haven't had one since.
I can see a few cat mannerisms in my dog though.. he pounces on things and can get very lazy if he's laying in the sun. But it's just not the same. ; )
i grew up always having cats around, so i'm not sure i would say i'm a cat person, just that they have always been part of our family. now we have 2 dogs and 2 cats, so i guess we're just pet people. our one cat thinks he's a dog though, he plays fetch and comes when you call him. all 4 of our pets have very different personalites, which makes it fun. glad that the cats are growing on you :-) i like their new house.
Is that cat as big as it looks? I have a 17 lb Maine Coon male cat but your cat looks bigger.
DOM & Katie - I definitely see dog traits in Mister Boots. Dinahsaur is full on bitchy cat though.
TheLady - He's a pretty big boy. Maybe 12 lbs? I LOVE Maine Coons. My aunt used to have one and he'd let me scratch his big ol' belly.
these little guys are adorable!!! we are contemplating get another cat (as a buddy for the one we have now...but maybe she likes being an only fur child??). i also point out cats...i laughed out loud when i read that ;-)
Katie C - I've only had solo pets but having these two kitties together is invaluable. I will always have pets in pairs from now on. Even Dinahsaur who seems completely antisocial and bitter really loves cuddling (and sometimes fighting) with her brother.
We have two dogs and a cat but the pair of animal thing is absolutely spot on. They are so much happier when they can be together. It solves so many separation anxiety issues that many pets develop. After you get past the potty training part its easy peasy.
I love the first picture! So effing cute.
I am SO not a pet person.. and my fiance, so badly, wants a dog. :[
I have 3 cats so I got kitty love everyone. The loud purring gets me and shopping for their favorite treats for kitteh toys makes me happy.
Ok,this is random but if animal hair is a problem I have a solution I found for my cats and dogs. Get The FURminator. My yoga teacher was raving about it, and how she doesn't have to worry about pet hair anymore. It's just a brush that is supposed to get rid of 90% of the undergrowth so your cat or dog won't leave hair all over the house anymore. I tried it and it has my seal of approval. You have to do it every month or two and it makes a HUGE difference! Go to the website and look at the picture of all the undergrowth it removes. The first time I did one of my cats it filled up a small trash can with her cat hair. It looked like way more that those pictures on the website. You can find them at petsmart or petco. I found petsmart to be cheaper back when I bought mine. They are a little expensive but well worth it if you are concerned about hair. Smaller sizes are cheaper so that will cut down on your cost since you only have cats.

Also, how do those claw covers work? Would you recommend them? I am thinking about trying them for my cats.
Darcie - Thanks for the tip! I think we have something kind of like that - we're just bad about using it. The fur shedding gets much worse as the weather transitions from cold to warm so we will definitely be using that brush/cutter this spring.
The soft paws are great! You basically fill the little rubber caps with super glue, clip their claws and stick the caps on. They last between 4-6 weeks. We wait until both of them have a few missing to replace them - so furniture still gets clawed at this point. But if you're diligent they work great!
I love watching people slowly become a cat/dog person. Some animals are too sweet to not eventually win you over :)
But I agree, pet hair is inevitable. I have lint rollers all over the house, in my car, and in my bag...
