One of the things I'm going to do to prep for the Everest Base Camp trek is to walk to work a couple times a week. It's just a little over 3 miles and will be a great way to engage my walking muscles (which seem to be a little different than running) and break in my hiking boots.

I love these WPA stamps in concrete.

Hi, dad! (that's his office building)
d.
On my "urban trek" I walked through 3 parks, two historical neighborhoods, a little bit of the ghetto, the first place my sister lived when she moved to OKC, lots of churches, lots of historical mansions, the bombing memorial, downtown and finally to my destination in Bricktown.

oh, I love downtown OKC. What a great place to walk through (even if it DOES include a little bit of the ghetto!) :)
Be careful on too much concrete, it can damage the traction on the bottom of your hiking boots. We look stupid, but when we're just doing our neighborhood walks, we walk in the grass instead of the sidewalk.
Aura - I actually run on grass in the park a lot to ease the impact on my joints! My boots are pretty tough though, I think they'll be fine.
Ohmygosh, somehow I missed that you all are ACTUALLY tackling the Everest thing and HOLY BOLOGNA it's totally inspiring. I don't know if you caught my post about Bucket Lists, but I think you've finally given me something to add to my new one!
Can't wait to follow your experience! So neat.

I love the exterior of buildings.. I'm really glad I'm not the only one taking photos of them.. ; )
Nobody tell Kathleen that almost all of OKC is the ghetto.
Kevin - ha! it's true! I just had a hobo walk by my house. But I wouldn't have it any other way.
OKC is a wonderful, safe, and fantastic city. I don't like to hear someone say it's ghetto because it is far from it. Been to LA or Houston lately? Drive one mile in another city and it will put it into perspective and make you appreciate the simplicity of our fine state capital!
Christel - I, personally, feel very safe in OKC but to folks who live in the suburbs certain areas can be a little intimidating. But I agree! OKC is gorgeous and has tons of character. But we do also have "ghetto" areas if you're norm is a sea of Ideal homes.
when I lived in OK (33rd & hudson) my fiance was convinced it was the ghetto, because of it's proximity to 23rd. haha. I often took offense to it. I think that it is one of the better places in north okc to live. :]
Hollie! I lived at 33rd and Hudson! (412 33rd to be exact)
grr! It won't let me view the photo! I lived @ 405 33rd 2nd house from the corner!
Hollie - I updated the privacy settings on the picture. Oops.
One of my close friends lived in the house on the corner next to yours! So I pretty much lived across the street. Fun!
that's too funny. small world. I LOVED the house that was across the street from the one you lived in. It was so cute.. The only neighbor I remember was the old tan man who had flamingos in his yard. haha
