Veggie Gardening: Making the Beds

Jeremy and I got a great start on our square foot veggie garden this weekend. We gathered our soil mix (1/3 coarse vermiculite, 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 compost) and built our frames. We also got our seeds in from the Hudson Valley Seed company and will get those started this week.
The most exciting part, after looking at the finished beds after a day of hard work, was using the compost we've been making from our food scraps for the past year.

sounds like mel's mix to me...the best dirt on earth :)
Carlee - Mel's mix it is! We feel like we need to add just a little more to the mix so we're going to pick up some more compost this week (worm castings and whatnot).
how do you compost on your own?
Very nice! I miss my big dirt garden!! I have a little patio garden going at least, but I'm going to enjoy seeing whatever you guys grow in yours. :)
You are going to love having the veggies. A quick compost tip- I keep a bowl in the freezer to hold on to the scraps for a few days before putting them in the composter- saves me trips when weather is less than ideal and does not stink up the kitchen...

We need to find a new container because the holes at the handles let bugs in. Yuck.
Amy - we tried a patio garden last year and failed big time. Hopefully this one will be a little more successful!
Meghan - We recently got a new trash can with a lid (to keep the stench at bay) that we keep under the sink - but freezing is a great idea!
I totally want to do this!

I'd love to have a little veggie garden at home.. we tried a couple summers ago, but our terrier dug everything up. He loves to dig.. a lot.. Hopefully it works out better for you!!!
huzzah!!!!!
wow, this is so cool! my boyfriend will be very jealous when I show him this! He hopes to get his veggie garden going this year! also your stuffed pepper and sea veggies recipe looks delicious!! you guys are amazing cooks!
Ahh, the vegetable garden. We love it, but it's not quite time for planting in Upstate NY yet! I envy you. Last year, we were hit with the viscious tomato blight. YUCK! I'd never experienced it before but it was terrible!
Speaking of composting- we compost too. What do you use in your house to hold all the scraps? We need something better than what we have!
All. That. Space. You are going to have so much fun...actually, it looks like you are already!
Stephenie - We used to use a little trash can under the sink. It didn't have a lid though so it got kind of stinky and attracted fruit flies. Recently we got a new little trash can (a cheapie - $6 at target) with a little lid. It's working out well so far.
I'm loving you blog lady, glad I stumbles across it!
So many fun posts & you and your man are freaking adorable!
JMay - Did you know I'm a Kathleen May? It means we should probably be friends. Thanks for stumbling by!
