1 Month Freelance

AndKathleenFreelance

I've officially been freelance for a whole month and here is what I've learned:

• I have been busy enough that I haven't had time to pretend to be a housewife. I work a solid 8 hours a day and Jeremy is still doing all the laundry.
• While I don't work in my pajamas it's more difficult to get dressed than I thought it would be. I've even thought about renaming our What We Wear project to "Watch Kathleen Let Herself Go"
• Even though I'm busy I've had enough time to make some fabulous new friends and reconnect with old ones.
• And sometimes I call my dad at 2:30 in the afternoon and force him to go shopping with me for trekking equipment.
• And sometimes I take 3-hour lunches that include fabulous conversation, wine and coffee.
• Other times I take no lunch at all - which I never did when I worked my 9-5.
• Half my time is spent estimating, billing and doing other admin things - like designing estimate and invoices. This part is hard but very necessary.
• The other half of my time is spent designing really beautiful things.
• I've learned that I'm doing the right thing - the hardest part was anticipating what freelance would be like. Now that I'm in it I can't imagine life any other way.

I still have a long ways to go - I need to get my retail offerings in line, get some paperwork filed, put a promotional packet together, and get my project management systems in place in order to become most efficient with my time. I look forward to tackling these things so I can spend most of my time designing, creating and focusing on this little blog here.

Thanks again to everyone - you all have been so crazy supportive. It makes everything so worth it.

Good for you!! = ) It sounds like you are rocking at freelance.

Yay! I am excited to see where your business goes. I am sure that you will have an even more thrilling update on year 1. Congrats! Finding something that you love to do and do well is not very common. I am glad that you found it.

Good for you Kathleen!
I hope the next 11 months will be just as busy! And I hope that cabin fever doesnt creep up on you. Atleast you have the internet to conect with everyone and not turn into a crazy cat lady...
Hmmm wait, I think that might be too late... It's ok though, we don't mind as long as you entertain us. dance monkey! (ok I took it too far didnt I?)

i'm a designer working from home as well and i was so inspired by your post with the passage

'Be Transparent. Let people look inside. Design from within. Create without doubt'

it's need to be on my desktop:)

love your blog-

Freelancing is such a huge learning, and yet freeing, experience! I've been smitten with your blog for months and am excited to see you're loving your new ventures so much!

Great work Kathleen! And it is so much fun to watch the projects and progress on here.

I think my first month of freelance was EXACTLY like this, with a 40% chance of more pajamas. :)

A month already?! Wow! And good for you, sounds like you are loving it!

Congrats!
It takes 30 days to make a habit, so looks like you're Sister Act II'ing up in there. (Get it?)

I was a home based employee for over 6 years. Regarding pajamas, my hard and fast rule was if I was not dressed by noon, my lunch hour was dedicated to showering and dressing! Good luck with your freelance career. I enjoy your blog very much!

you are getting shit done, girl.

and i envy these lunches of conversation, wine and coffee.

ok, wait, i envy this whole work-from-home thing. all of it.

man. i'm depressed now.

Basecamp? ;)

Go, you! You're my hero, and your work makes the world much better looking.

You guys are awesome. Thank you, thank you.

Inspiring! I'm starting my photog business so I'm loving being inspired by anyone getting out there and taking control. I'm not in a position to give up my day job but perhaps one day soon. All the very best - keep telling us your story and pushing us further too.
