Working on my Fitness

When I work out it turns into an '80s dance party with Jane Fonda. Not really. But I wish.
I've been active since I was a kid - it started out with gymnastics in elementary school. Then basketball and volleyball in middle school. At that time I realized I sucked at sports. So in highschool I moved on to modern dance and practiced Ashtanga Yoga (Primary Series) like it was my part-time job - which I continued to do well into college. Eventually, I graduated and started hitting the gym after work. Then I played roller derby for a couple years - and while I liked to skate fast, I just wasn't very good at taking hits. So now I like to hit the gym on a daily basis.
I've had a few emails asking me what my workout routine is - so here it goes. This is a schedule that works for me:
• Monday - Spinning (1hr)
• Tuesday - Spinning (1 hr) and/or Muscle Conditioning (1hr)
• Wednesday - Spinning (1hr)
• Thursday - Cardio / Muscle Conditioning (2hr)
• Friday - Spinning and/or general workout with Jeremy (1hr)
• Saturday - off
• Sunday - general workout with Jeremy (1hr)
Note: Jeremy hits the gym at his work during lunch every day where he does weights and a little cardio.
Spinning is a cycling class that gets my heart rate up as high as running - but without the impact. My "general workouts" usually consist of intervals of running (10 minutes at a time) and weights. And when it's nice outside I'll usually just run 3 miles around the park by my house, go rock climbing or on a hike, instead of going to the gym. There are days that I will skip every once in a while if I'm not feeling good - but otherwise, I treat my workouts like a meeting I can't miss. I'm able to quiet my mind and get into my body when I workout - I focus on the pain and the sweat to keep from ever getting bored. And when that's not enough I just think about what Madonna or Jessica Beil think about when they work out.
P.S. One of my favorite fitness blogs is (Never Home) Maker.

This is great, thanks! I posted about "my fitness" today, too. I started taking a bootcamp class a month ago, and I LOVE it. It's approx. 30 minutes of high-intensity cardio and conditioning four times a week. I need to get better about doing "general" workouts on the weekends. I am so lazy on the weekends, sigh. Thanks for the inspiration!
(oh, and when I was a kid, my mom did Jane Fonda workouts, ha!)
ROLLER DERBY! You're my hero. I want so badly to tryout, but my boyfriend cringes every time I mention it. I would have to be the fast one, because I don't think I could handle the hits either.
I spent about a year doing Mysore practice about 4 times a week with Tim Miller (the first American to be certified to teach by P. Jois). Loved it - but couldn't continue to pay the cost of the classes. He isn't cheap! It was like a new Toyota Yaris car payment each month. But it's a great practice - I kinda miss it but running is really my thing, even if I'm not super fast.
I keep thinking I'll convert on of the spare bedrooms into a practice room on of these days.
I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU ACTUALLY WORK OUT THIS MUCH. Seriously, when my mom invited me to the once a week zumba class and I went two weeks in a row I was like "Damn I'm fit!"
I'm jealous of your dedication to fitness. I just can't do it.
ahhh the gym. cringeeeeeeeeeee.
heres my story in a nutshell.
5 years ago started going to the gym (like jeremy, gym at work, went at lunch 3-4 times a week) then i left there, got a gym membership and was unemployed for a while, did a few jobs here and there but after my 1 year i realized its too much $ and i was making min wage. ive been out of the gym for over a year now and i really need to go back. i thought i could just go jog. turns out nope im a huge couch potato. i snowboard in the winter so it's not bad then. I just hate spending 40-50$ a month on a dumb gym but i miss my muscles. (i said this would be a nut shell... its more like a forest)
Point is: you are my idol. I want to work out 4-5 times a week. maybe ill try soon.u motivate me.
Hi Kathleen,
Thanks for sharing! Going to the gym everyday is something I really enjoy myself. It's great to wind down, contemplate my day, or, if I've had a great day, a way to spend some energy.
I always love hearing about what others do to stay in shape.
I'm curious, do you still practice yoga? Have you ever tried pilates? I've thought about taking an introductory pilates class and wondered what others thought about it.
Thanks!

I've always wanted to try a spinning class!
oh boy, Kathleen! That is commitment! I feel really great if I make it to the gym 3 times a week. I do try to get an even workout throughout the week though. cardio/strength training/yoga or pilates.
Sincerely,
Claire.
