From the backyard to the table: Cantaloupe

We haven't had the best success with our vegetable garden so far. Between the vine borers and the 100+ degree temperatures we've yet to enjoy a good harvest from our backyard. The one exception has been the cantaloupe - the seed that found it's way through our compost and thrived in our little veggie patch.
This cantaloupe was finally ready to eat this weekend - ate it we did. This is what survival of the fittest tastes like - a juicy cantaloupe.

I guess next year you can plant cantaloupe and know it'll do well!
The same thing happened to my friend - they got some interesting squash-like vegetable grow up from the compost - looked like a rough zucchini.
My grandma always has cantaloupe come up from the compost!
I hate cantaloupe, but I love these photos. Beautiful! I've never paid so much attention to them! It looks like a brain! Wrap that brain in prosciutto, and maybe we'll talk.
Wow, that grew really well! I always thought the outside looked so funny. Like a brain!
I've always wondered what a cantaloupe was, and now I know! We Aussies call them Rockmelons :)
Rockmelons! I like it!
I almost planted cantaloupes this year and at the last minute decided that they would take up too much space. Seeing this beauty has me regretting that decision because they are just so good!
I love that really closeup photo. It looks like embroidered fabric.
