I made this: A rustic veggie pie.

After this came out of the oven, Sunday evening, I couldn't stop staring at it. I kept on thinking "I made this. I made this!" My own abilities to throw together a nice meal, from scratch, with just a few ingredients on hand were blowing my mind. Just a few years ago I could barely combine ingredients for a cheese lasagna, reserved for special holidays only, and here it was - just a rainy Sunday evening. And I'm making a veggie pie! From scratch! But enough with the exclamation marks because behind the scenes was a very messy kitchen and we didn't eat until 9:30pm.

As we were eating I couldn't help but think of all of my friends who state with confidence that their grandma is the best cook ever. EVER. Between bites, I kept imagining what my future grandkids will think about my food. I like to think that I'm becoming a cook for them.

I want to know - Is your grandma the best cook ever? What is your favorite home cooked meal?

I used this recipe but had to substitute a few ingredients here and there. I also added sweet potatoes to the mix. And I was really impatient with the crust and skipped a few steps in order to eat this meal before midnight.

Aw you're so cute. I known totally what you mean about suddenly realizing you can cook! I was very resistant to learning how to cook, I think because I thought I'd never measure up to my mom and grandma (who are amazing) but I'm getting really into it.

When my husband and I met with the rabbi who officiated our wedding ceremony, one of the things he asked us was how we would describe each other to a friend. One of the things my husband said was "a good cook" and I was floored! I can't even describe how awesome that felt to hear!

What a pretty veggie pie! I am getting a little braver in the kitchen, but you are WAY ahead of me, m'dear.

My dad's mom is THE master of Italian cuisine. She grows her own tomatoes and cans them at the end of the season to use later for homemade tomato sauce. As a kid, I would visit her in the summertime, and I still remember the smell of her stewing and canning tomatoes. Oh, and she even makes her own Italian sausage from scratch!

On the other side of my family, my mom's mom is a terrible cook, God love her. My mom isn't the best cook either. She's a good baker, though.

I love your food posts! Keep 'em comin'. xo.

O my god, my grandmother is a kitchen goddess. She makes things that I couldn't imagine eating anywhere else, like beef patties with gravy, which kind of make me want to gag, but hers are FABULOUS. I called my grandmother just yesterday to get top secret instructions on how to make apple pie. She's my culinary hero.

With that said, you might be Culinary Hero #2. This veggie pie looks so effin' yummy!

My Grandma is the best cook ever. We spent every summer with her as kids and, without fail, we'd get potatoes with eggs, beans and homemade flour tortillas. To this day, I am still amazed at how her fried chicken never stuck to the pan that was non-stick no less. Sigh. Favorite homecooked meal? My spaghetti. Made by others? My Grandma's flour tortillas.

Many congrats on your cooking achievement. It looks marvelous! I wish I could bake.

My grandma makes the most fantastic homemade hot fudge.

Interestingly enough, my grandmothers are not the best cooks I know. And one of them is Italian. My Italian grandmother though (as well as my mother) do know some good traditional recipes that they can always make well and by memory which to me is always the most impressive thing.

I love anything with squash and sweet potato. I will have to try this recipe, with a diff. dough recipe. That one is too high maintenance. I like the Enchanted Broccoli Forest version - 1.25 c flour, 6 tbs butter in the processor, some milk to bind it all up and done. Works every time.

no my grandma was not the best cook...total lie, she was seriously a baking marvel. Oh, and BLIND- no measuring necessary.

One of my grandmothers was a fantastic cook. The other...well, she managed. Her daughters all said they learned to cook when they got married, then went back and taught her.

You're adorable.
My Grandma is a soulful cook, but not necessarily good. She overcooks everything except potatoes, which she mashes into lumpy, starchiness.

She's a wonderful baker. She used to win pie-baking contests!

Lovely pie! Thanks for stopping by my little blog, it means alot :)
oh and my grandma is a HORRIBLE cook.

Funny enough my grandma's never cooked. But they did each have a few signature items I remember loving - like Monkey Bread. My great grandmothers canned and made all kinds of goodness. This looks divine.

awww! that's so sweet! i love the idea of becoming a cook for your grandkids. and that veggie pie looks YUMMY.

i actually used to say that my mom was the best cook ever. i still fondly remember all the delicious things she used to make for us (back when she used to cook homemade dinner EVERY single night of the week). like vegetable calzones with a homemade whole wheat dough topped with melted butter and a little bit of tabasco. yummmmmmmmmm.

that looks delicious!!

my favorite homecooked meal is something my mom came up with when we were kids. She makes stovetop stuffing, then takes deli sliced turkey breast and rolls the stovetop up in the turkey (picture a burrito style roll) puts them all in a casserole dish, then pours turkey gravy over the whole thing and bakes until warm. They aren't gourmet, but they are DELICIOUS!

this made me laugh my head off. P.s Pie looks great!
