Anatomy of an Outfit: The Snowpocalypse

AnatomySnowpocalypse

As of last month I hadn't been shopping in a long while. I've just found myself uninterested. And when I would occasionally peruse the (virtual or otherwise) racks of old standbys like Urban Outfitters and Forever 21 everything just felt cheap. Nothing was striking my fancy.

That is until I stumbled upon a BCBG sale. There were so many quality pieces priced at serious discounts that I wanted - it was hard to decide. However, with my new approach to getting dressed all I had to do was ask myself "Would I survive in this in the post-apocalypse?" If the answer was no, I left it on the rack. And I didn't feel too embarrassed about shopping for doomsday gear in the mall because c'mon, look at movies like Dawn of the Dead and shows like The Walking Dead - a bulk of the story takes place in the mall - and you better believe I'd be looting the racks. This girl has gotta fight zombies in style.

Lucky for me we're in the midst of a total snowpocalypse. There's nothing better to fulfill an end-of-the-world fantasy than crunching through the snow on deserted streets in layers upon layers of kickass neutrals. Only to be followed by an India Pale Ale in a warm and bustling bar with my partner in crime.

My Sister's Hat - Helly Hansen
Scarf, Jacket & Tee - Urban Outfitters
Hoodie - American Apparel
Leggings - BCBG
Hiking Socks - Sierra Trading Post
Boots - Report (again, almost a decade old)
Purse - Target (also worn as a fanny pack 50% of the time)
Gloves - Target

P.S. At Alt some of my blog buddies were shocked at my height. And lately I've been asked how tall I am with more frequency. So, here it goes - I'm 5'9" - and usually closer to 6' with heels.

Your outfit is awesome! Congrats on making it through Snowpocalypse 2011.

The Walking Dead = awesomeness and knowledge on how best to prepare. :)

My husband would love your shopping approach. He has a zombie escape plan. ;)

Hmmm. I always though you were tall... Then again, I'm rather short. So maybe it's just a matter of perspective.

Wait a second - I'm 5'9". And you seem so much taller than me.

I have those same boots and love them. I'm 5'10'' normally so when I wear those I feel like superwoman about to kick major design butt.

Sexiest snow suit I'VE ever seen.

So many invites on the go! Don't interchange any of the info! Can you imagine if all the guests from one wedding ended up at the reception for another? Ha!

Jason - And TWO of the invites are for brides named Megan. This has become especially confusing.

Oh danger!
No tipsy tweaking to those invites!

Yeah!!!

So, I found your blog from a blog I follow..or a follow of a follow of a follow...the trail is fuzzy now. At any rate, I didn't get to you through any Oklahoma bloggers, but after looking through your site, I have realized we live quite close to each other! Crazy. I love your outfit. I've been wearing my cashmere BCBG leggings nonstop now that we are Snoklahoma.

Jacquelyn - Hello! I'm glad you stumbled this way and how exciting that we're neighbors!

jacqelyn and kathleen~
yay! i love seeing my blogging friends collide! :)
kathleen, your outfits are always so great, and the best part is that you follow the number one rule for wearing leggings: the top must cover the crotch! ;)

Abi - Rules are made for breaking. I'm probably going to find a way to wear a mid-riff top with these leggings in the summertime. ;)

Funny! (Abi's crotch comment) That reminds me of the rule at the middle school, the girls are no longer allowed to wear yoga pants because all the boys kept deeming it Yoga Pants Thursday and were lost all day oogling the yoga pants and their lack of either visible panty line or trying to catch thong lines without getting caught. I've got a boy and a girl not yet in middle school. But I'm afraid, very afraid...

you are a doll and i love that hat.

i want to go to ALT someday; i bet it was great. isn't it funny how we perceive our blogland friends through their blogs and then meet them and some things catch us by surprise?

are you ready for snow days round two? i just went to the grocery store and it was a zoo.

xoxo

Sarah - ALT was a blast. It was fun hearing everyone's voices after reading their words for so long.

And yes! I stocked up - I do my shopping at Native Roots in Norman on the weekends. Never a mad house and they were fully stocked!

a. Your leggings are boss.

b. Shit. I thought you were mini-sized. Guess not.

c. I was reading an old issue of Q today and in the letters to the editor, there was one from Michelle Martin-Coyne and thought of you. Here it is:

"I just wanted to say that if you are gonna say one thing about a guy and speak of someon'es vagina maybe it is worth asking about it. The girl in the video has dark hair and tattoos. Plus, were it me.... I would have worn heels. Peace and Rock"

It was regarding Q falsely stating that the naked woman in The Flaming Lips' live backdrop was Michelle. The letter is whatev, but the "Were it me... I would have worn heels" was a line I thought might further feed your girl crush.

SJ - Haha. That's awesome.

And yeah - not mini-sized at all!

Kathleen - I had never heard of Native Roots -- thank you for turning me on to it. I just looked it up and love that it is local.local.local. My hubs and I will check it out.

To answer your question, yes, I am a contemporary calligraphist. On the side, I have been doing projects here and there and have always had quite the obsession with pen and ink.

{By day I am an English teacher at Putnam City North High School and mummy to a two-year-old, Lucia).

I am currently working on putting my portfolio together and getting myself out there.

LEAP.

I will let you know when my samples are up so you can check out my work! I am very excited about getting things up and running ... officially. Thanks for asking. I am not going to lie, it kinda made my heart sing.

xoxo

Sarah - Native Roots is my very favorite! They're in Norman so it may be a trek but totally worth it. Jeremy and I hang out with my family in Norman on Saturdays and do our shopping then.

Keep me updated on your samples and work! I need a (contemporary) calligrapher and know some printers that need a calligrapher every so often.

I totally thought you were mini size too!! Now that I think about it, you do have some long legs. Your outfit rocks!

how darling are you?! i was just going through my load of ALT stuff to find your cute business cards. how i love the ampersand. anyway, thank you for you great comment and for leading me to your inspiring blog. am off to do some serious browsing; you have such stellar stuff here.

Okies unite!

I also went through the design program at OU (until I skipped town and headed down to Austin, TX).

Your designs rock, and your outfits almost make me want to change out of my pajamas while I work from my home office.

*almost*

Marta - Shucks! Thank you - I'm flattered my comment was read amongst the hundreds.

#8 - Yay Okies! Are you still in Austin? P.S. I'm currently in PJs. ;)

Yep, I'm still in Austin, although my big-ass family occupies approximately 76% of Oklahoma's population. I go back several times a year for what we call "Family Days of Obligation." : )

"However, with my new approach to getting dressed all I had to do was ask myself "Would I survive in this in the post-apocalypse?" If the answer was no, I left it on the rack."

hahahahha! best shopping method ever.

Oh my goodness - I just realized that I've been getting fabulous recipes from your blog for weeks, including the dinner I made tonight, but we were both at Alt Summit and didn't meet! Bummed about that but thanks for all the delicious inspiration
