On Becoming Landlords

On Friday we bought a house. Let me rephrase - on Friday we bought the cutest little house in the whole world. But we don't get to live in it - nope, we bought this house for someone else to live in.

This story actually starts almost 3 years ago. Jeremy was taking me on a date to see Feist but first we stopped for dinner at a Mexican restaurant. Over cheesy enchiladas we talked about the future. We started daydreaming about traveling the world and figuring out a way to one day work together and maybe retire at 50. It was there that we first started brainstorming what is now Ampersand Properties, Ltd. Co.

So, on Friday we bought a house. We celebrated with cupcakes and cheap champagne on bare wood floors. I walked around the empty place - giddy at the thought that this is our house but a little envious of whoever gets to make it their home.

If you're interested in living in the cutest little house in the whole world email me at jeremyandkathleen@gmail.com for more information.

Ampersand Properties! Perfect. I am so happy for you guys. Dreamings.

Congratulations! What a great little house!

Awesome! Many congrats. As for the house, cute, cute, cute!

Oooh, it is so cute!

And I love the name -- Ampersand Properties. LOVE it!

Yay! It's so cute! You guys are so cute too! Champagne and cupcakes are totally my preferred way of celebrating too. :)

Oh, and kudos on the perfect name for you guys. :)

congratulations kathleen and jeremy! i'ts super cute. pam

Congrats you guys. I had a roommate a few months after I bought my house & before I got married. I loved having a rent check come each month.

Congrats! It truly is totally adorable! If only I lived closer and you needed a design assistant! ;)

I know someone will snag it up quickly!!! ox

how exciting!
come buy property in austin!

OMG, that IS the cutest house ever!

Awesome! Congratulations, this is so exciting!

Congrats!!! I think Ampersand Properties would make a great "Matters" post, btw. I'm terrible at the business side of anything, so I love to read about how other people get started.

Thanks you all! I am really excited about it. It's kind of unreal and feels way too adult.

Kelly - I'm starting to seriously consider hiring an assistant...

Jrose - Definitely! I was thinking about putting something together this week.

It IS such a sweet little house -- and the company name is so perfect!

(My gosh, I'd love to live here...)

It does look super cute! I wish that it was in my price range, though I know that will be hard for me to find and it still be a super little house. Great adventures ahead for you two!

Congratulations J&K! Its so cute! Here's hoping you find a tenant quickly.

Congrats on the buy! It does look like a very cute house :)

congrats on your purchase- i know it will make a lovely home for the future tenants:) great idea- me and my husband sit around and talk about how we can retire and travel as well- you guys are on to something!

Yay! Darling! I can't wait to see you decorate it!

kat

oops, that was from kat, not justin :)

Haha - thanks Kat! We actually won't be decorating it, since we'll probably never live there. And it's already in tip-top condition!

I will come live in your house and be your assistant. I'm looking for a big change in my life! Congrats!

Congrats! I would love to buy a little house and fix it up someday for myself, but I haven't gotten there yet. And now you have two! From the looks of those shiny wood floors, it seems like your rent house is already in great shape!

this is a dream of mine. So happy you could make it a reality. And I totally want to see that frilly little dress you have on.

I'd love to move in... if you could just move the house to Orlando ;)

Bravo! I'm too afraid to even consider starting the buying process on our own home, let alone one to rent. :)

ah! congrats! I'm rather jealous of this adorable little house. If I was going to grad school in your area, I would totally try to rent it! This is really awesome.

Are you planning to purchase more rental properties over time?

Meghan - If only I could afford an assistant!

Michelle - We purposefully bought next to a college that has a great grad-school program with hopes that we can rent out to students. We already have 1 other rental property (Jeremy's old house that he used to live in) and we do plan on purchasing more over time. The goal is 1 property a year, if possible.

Congratulations on your new property and retirement future. Now following your blog - it's a great read.

That's awesome! I'm jealous of you guys; well on your way to that early retirement!

how great for you guys! and yes, for whoever gets to live there too. i'm jealous of all these fellow 20-somethings i see buying properties and renting them out. someday my husband and i will have to follow suit, but it will be a bit later in life. be sure to post all about the pros and cons of being a landlord/landlady. :]

Congratulations! I hope it rents soon. I also one day feel it would be good to have a rental property, but, well, the economy kicked us in the ass for about 2 years and only started relenting recently.

We may have missed the boat (that sailed in early 2010) on embarrassingly cheap San Diego properties.

what a beautiful house!

it looks like the perfect place for a newlywed couple to start new beginnings together!

oh, and, CONGRATULATIONS on becoming landlords!!!

So cool! I'm really interested in the gooey details of how this develops for you.

I was daydreaming of doing something similar for a while... but "Landlords for Dummies" actually kind of scared me away from it. For now. I am sure I shall revisit the idea later...

Heather / AMG - I've got a property matters post coming up tomorrow!

Omg I am so interested.

oh my god if this were in texas i would be ALL. OVER IT.

Have you rented out this property yet? I would LOVE to come and see it if you have not!

Vicki - Yes, this property has already been rented out.
