The Most Spontaneous Jeremy Has Ever Been

A few years ago I read a blog post about some girl being surprised by her husband with a getaway to Paris. Since then I've had this unrealistic fantasy of Jeremy calling me up on afternoon and telling me to grab my passport, a bikini and to meet him at the airport. I've even told Jeremy about said fantasy - you know, kind of like telling someone how badly you want a surprise birthday party.

But, I have to tell you all something about Jeremy. The dude has his routines. For example, every night when we decide that we're ready for sleep, Jeremy goes through his ritual of cleaning out the cat box, washing his hands, brushing his teeth (for a solid 3 minutes), taking off an article of clothing, folding it, hanging it or tossing it in the hamper. Then he calls for Mister Scooty Boots (by whatever pet name he has for him that week - this week it's "Keister") and pets him a little, sets the alarm and crawls into bed. What's most impressive is that he even goes through this routine on nights like this. Meanwhile, I'm in bed with all my clothes on the floor in about 3 seconds flat. I'll put them away on Sunday. And my teeth. I'll deal with those in the morning. Jeremy likes structure and organization - I could go into how sexy that can be in its own way, but this story isn't about that.

So the other day Jeremy picks me up for lunch (we go to lunch together once a week - it's our routine) and as he pulls into the driveway he says "grab our health records - they're in the file cabinet under 'Health Records' where I neatly tucked them away in alphabetical order." I was caught a little off-guard but at that point it felt almost as if we were going on a spontaneous adventure. Except, instead of "we're going to the airport" he said "we're going to the health department."

Jeremy was taking us to finish out our vaccinations. We started our round of Hep A&B vaccines before we left for Nepal and were months overdue for the third round of shots. The nurse asked us if we were traveling abroad as she shoved the spring-loaded syringe into my shoulder. I couldn't help but have a glimmer of hope that the airport was our next stop.

Are you all spontaneous? Or are you more of a methodical planner? What's the most spontaneous thing you've ever done?

I would have to say I'm middle of the road but my husband on the other hand... our first date was a trip to Spain to the Benicassim music festival! I mentioned once in an offhanded way that it looked like fun, next thing I know we're roadtripping down the coast of Spain. It was once of the best weekends ever :-)

well? WELL??!?!?!?

AND?!?!??!??!??

was the airport next or not?????

aararrggghhh - you know, as a desk jockey trying to break out of my horribly boring 8-530 daily grind (w great benefits, tho - not complaining all THAT much) - I do live spontaneously thru your adventures - throw me a bone here!

I'm a Jeremy. I'm a planner, a researcher, routines and everything. I've been like this my whole life and only intesified it when I was diagnosed as diabetic. I now have bedtimes, quarterly doctor appointment, a meal regimen, everything. I like routines. My husband, on the other hand, must be a Kathleen. He loves surprises, last minute plans, late night crazy excursions and busting out into movie quoting or sing of showtunes. We're perfect for one another.

i was just laughing out loud. thanks.

Sarah - A FIRST DATE ROADTRIPPING IN SPAIN!? Jealous.

JoL - Ha! No. No airport. He had to rush off to a meeting at work after spending a good hour at the health department.

Margie - Yes, it's definitely a complementary relationship.

Desi - Ha. You're welcome!

That's awesome. Vaccinations make for an interesting lunch 'date.' Ha.

As much as I'd like to think I'm spontaneous, I would probably flip out if I were asked to "pack my bags immediately, we're off to the airport." I need to know where/when/how/what about work/who's gonna watch our house/ our dogs?! etc. I am the planner among us. I'd be more likely to surprise my husband. xo.

OK - thank you!

Now I can answer your question =) I'm both, depending on my mood, but probably lean more towards the methodical planner. So's hubs, so we can move in the same groove, or counteract and complement. And we both love surprises.

My actual name is Melissa Kathryn Planning Joulwan.

When we went to Prague last year, I had "spontaneous time" on our itinerary, sandwiched between "Museum of Communism" and "Walking Tour of New Town."

HA! Ryan is spontanious but as far as gifts go I can expect practical things like.... an external hard drive for Christmas (alrighttt!), cabinets installed in the kitchen (hoooraaaay!), a triathlon bag (???). Men... :) I totally dreamed we were hanging out last night - must be getting excited about August!

Would it make sense if I said that long ago and far away I was so spontaneous that these days I am totally opposite? I plan everyday and most days even a 15 min "surprise" can offset said plans..sigh

My brother....such a romantic with the lunch date vaccinations. :)

Ok. I'm convinced that you and I are exactly the same and my boyfriend is a Jeremy double. I'm all over the place and at any given moment am ready for an adventure, the boyfriend would need 2 weeks advance notice so he can mentally prepare himself for whatever I drag him along to do.

I like to think I'm a little bit of both, though I definitely tend toward the end of being a meticulous planner. My favorite thing about this post is that it's so clear how much you love Jeremy.

Both my husband and I are pretty spontaneous. One Sunday we left the house for breakfast and ended up on a beautiful country road to Red Rock State Park. So excited we went, it was our mini Sedona.
