I'm serious about this black & grey (and a little bit of denim and pops of brown) uniform idea. I used to really love that what I was wearing was an instant expression of self that could be absorbed by anyone who laid eyes on me. I wanted to make statements with victorian shirts and booty shorts. I wanted people to not know quite what to think about me - or to know EXACTLY what to think about me - just by looking at my outfit.
But lately... Lately I've been turning more inward. I've been focused on capturing, shaping and sharing ideas (big & small) that find their way to the surface of my mind. Ideas that thrive within limitations. So maybe this uniform idea is actually a fair representation of where my head is at lately - maybe it has the power cultivate something fantastic.
t-shirt - bcbg
jeans - street
belt - target
necklace - blue 7 and vintage
boots - frye
Great oufit but I like your hair color/style! Ha. What product/styling tools do you use?

OK, clothes are about self expression. Walking, living, everyday art. I just feel you should know what I believe before I make this completely shallow statement... Ready?
ReplyDeleteYou look hot in this! And your hair? Amazing.
The end.
I read somewhere that those kind of superficial limitations could be good for creatives (or - that it was natural for them to be attracted to them) because it removed a decision-making process from their routines. It freed up precious creativity for opportunities that might be more interesting for their brains to pursue. Interesting concept. One that I have also been mulling over lately.
ReplyDeleteI envy people who have a "uniform," but when it comes to my personal style I am all over the place. There are just so many fabulously different pieces of clothing that challenge me to find ways to wear them.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you can't develop a personal uniform until you've exhausted all the possibilities and know exactly what suits you best... or maybe, as you were saying, it goes along with state of mind.
Since apparently I'm writing an essay here, I'll go ahead and add that yesterday I availed myself of a full-on Kathleen-inspired post-apocalyptic outfit and it totally helped me kick ass through a long, scary, apocalypse-esque day.
Your confidence, creativity, and positivity inspire meeee!!!
My boyfriend has a "uniform." Only black t-shirts, underwear and socks under his clothes, and all his work shirts are basically the same thing (button-down collared shirts with stripes in blues and greens). If you look in his closet it looks like he's in the military.
ReplyDeleteI like Liz's line of thinking here... also, I went to Catholic schools from 1st-12th grade, so I grew up in uniforms, and I didn't hate them. They made mornings much easier.
ReplyDeleteThis time of year, the desire to simplify my life kicks in, so I'm getting rid of a LOT of clothes (passing them along to a local charity), and paring down my closet to the very basics. Wish me luck! Sometimes I get nostalgic about certain pieces, ha. But honestly A LOT of it needs to go. xo.
black almost makes you look really bad ass. I'm a fan.
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine has been wearing a self imposed uniform since November. You might find her perspective interesting (although she also created a new name too)

Mmm. Loving the hair.
ReplyDeleteErin - This is days worth of dirty hair. I simply got in the shower and washed my roots with a teensy bit of shampoo and then conditioned. From there I just used the blow dryer and flat iron to get some big waves. I talk more about my hair products in this post: http://jeremyandkathleen.blogspot.com/2011/12/curly-girl.html
ReplyDeleteBianca - Aw, shucks! YOU ARE.
Liz - YES. Exactly.
Enantiom3r - Your name makes me think you're a hacker spy that should ALWAYS be dressing for the post-apocalypse. Right? In all seriousness, huge compliment. I'm so glad I could inspire!
Francine - That's so funny. Jeremy definitely has a system but is far more colorful than I am these days.
Nicole - YES! I was thinking about how bitter I would've been wearing a uniform in school and ways I would've pushed the limits. Now I'm kind of trying to impose that same sort of thinking on my adult self.
Rolerkite - YAY! Badass is always a good look. xo!
Cecily - Oohhh, I'm interested to take a look. Sounds intriguing.
Ashley - It was inspired by that MIA video!
That hair is downright badass sexy! Love it.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite things about you, Kathleen, is that you lie on the edge of this world and another. It's fantastic. Especially with those boots (since you told me they're from Frye, I've been stalking the site and praying they bring something like them back because I want myself a pair -- still that actress in me).
ReplyDeleteI am really loving your hair like that.
ReplyDeleteyour hair looks absolutely FAB in these photos.
ReplyDeletePS. I wanted to meet you at BNO at the Makeup Bar, but I did not get over to you before your left. Hopefully next time. xoxo, Sarah
ReplyDeleteYou kill it. Period.
ReplyDeleteAnd seriously, your hair. My gosh.
Black, dark gray and denim are pretty much my uniform, too. I finally stopped resisting the urge to buy more gray shirts. Let it be! More gray it is!
