Kitchen Advice Needed - HELP!

Jeremy and I need some serious kitchen advice. Stainless steel appliances or not?

We are getting a new stove and dishwasher.

Should we stick with white? Or go with stainless steel?

Here's the case for stainless steel:
• instant modern/chic wow factor
• matches the fridge

Here is the case for white:
• matches the cabinets for a more seamless look
• lighter / airy
• sweeter - less industrial than steel

Also - I should mention that all the images online that show a 3/4 view of stainless steel appliances have BLACK sides. That will totally break up the visual flow of our kitchen.

If we go for a white stove should we definitely get a white dishwasher?

Help!

  1. I would go stainless steel, but look for appliances with sides that are also stainless steel. For soem reason white just doesn't seem updated to me. You can spend all this money and it may look like it still needs updating. Does that make sense?

  2. I am with Emily, I would definitely go stainless steel. After all my hours and hours of HGTV/TLC viewing stainless steel will add the most value to your home. It is also something that is said to be pretty timeless as far as value.

I also think it looks great and will take the kitchen to a whole new level.

As far as getting the return on your investment stainless steel is it.

  3. I agree with Emily and Hallie that stainless steel absolutely gives that updated look.

However, I have made the choice not to consider resale value when updating my home. I consider my own happiness with my things first and foremost. I'm designing my home for Jeremy and I - not for someone that wants to buy our home when we decide to sell it if ever.

I mean - the previous owners weren't thinking of ME when they put in ugly wallpaper in the bathroom. ;)

I'm still completely torn. I need more comments!

  4. Kathleen & Jeremy -

LOVE your blog, have been reading for awhile but never commented... thought I might share some ideas for your kitchen.

Regarding stainless steel - I am with you regarding the black sides that would seem choppy and since you aren't planning to sell for awhile, why buy something you dislike!?

For the range, since you will see the sides, I suggest white. I ran across this beauty: http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=169230-46-KERS807SWW&lpage=none - a little pricy but it is white which ties nicely with your cabinets yet still has a "hint" of SS.

Regarding the dishwasher, I think you could go either way, white or SS (since you won't see the sides and it is closer to the fridge)... but I really like this one http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=88435-83-CDW9380NSS&lpage=none which is stainless all the way down and seems to be a little "lighter" which matches your fridge better than the gunmetal color of some alternatives.

Good luck - can't wait to see the transformation!

  5. If you can find one with stainless sides, go with that. I think the charcoal, green, and white theme looks so pretty together.

  6. @Liz(eric) - Thank you for the comment (and the links)! I do love the white stoves with the white tops but they all seem to get quite a bit pricier. Probably a little out of our budget.

@Aura - maybe the trick is finding a lighter stainless steel - and definitely steel sides if we go that route.
