Inspiration - Couch Coverings

I came across these images via The Style Files today.

The amazing antiques, herring-bone wood floor, architecture - all breathtaking right? And am I completely naive to think the paint on the wall achieved that kind of weathered treatment over centuries?

But what really caught my eye - and what might actually be applicable to my own home - are the couch covers. Typically, when I see blankets on couches, I think of nasty old college couches that were found on the street and covered with blankets to hide vomit stains. Or I think of the crocheted granny-square blanket draped over the back of the sofa on Roseanne.

But this makes it look classy and sophisticated. An interesting concept I hadn't given much thought to before.

  3. hi Kathleen! I've been stalking w/o commenting for a little while now -- congrats on the beautiful wedding. the blankets on couch thing IS genius -- do you have any idea what sort of fabric they are? this actually looks quite a bit like the old couch i have (down to the euro pillows/shams), which could use some sprucing up.

  4. Hi Jaime! Nice to meet you! I can't tell what the blanket is on the first couch - maybe a cotton sateen, velvet, or satin fabric.

The second couch looks like a heavy linen - but I would recommend maybe a heavy canvas - I think the trick is getting something with plenty of weight and durability.

If you end up doing this treatment I'd love to see pics of the finished product!

  5. Oh my gosh. I am totally going to do a Rosanne style plaid couch with multicolor crochet granny blanket over the back in my next house. I love that stuff. That's what's going to be "in" next.

  6. Tara - I totally agree! I love the crocheted granny-squares - especially in a mid-century modern house. Remember when we were perusing eBay for them a few years back?
