I love the presentation of this sketch book at the Harwood Museum in Taos, NM.
The only drawing I really enjoyed in college was contour (where you can't pick up your pencil or pen) with a Sharpie.
Working in a creative, fast-paced, industry my "sketching" consists more of to-do lists. If I were to actually sit down and start doodling I'd feel too self-aware... but I want a notebook filled with cool drawings!
How do I get started? Any advice?
So funny you mention lists. My notebooks are always filled up with lists. Of to dos, adjectives, things i like, etc. I always long for actual sketches in my sketchbook but it seems like every time i sketch, if it isnt perfect then i hate it and rip it out and throw it away. lol. which I guess is the whole point of having one...having a place to make things that are imperfect?
ReplyDeleteThe hard part is putting your stuff in one book. I tend to just draw on everything all the time, but nothing formal. I have folders full of notes from college that I keep for the doodles. I was thinking of cutting these out and putting them in a book but now I think I'm just going to scan them and put them online somewhere.
ReplyDeleteAs far as advice I don't have anything really useful. I have a drawing table at home that I've yet to draw at, but my desk at work is covered with papers full of notes and doodles. The best way to start is to just assume no one is ever going to see it but you. If you start thinking about an audience it will make you edit yourself.
I once got asked not to draw zombies during meetings with clients. I don't work there anymore.
Kevin - I totally agree. I tend to sketch on post-it notes. Maybe I can have the discipline to just start sticking them in a book.
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree with not editing myself.
Haha! Drawing zombies where I work is encouraged. Which is why I'll never leave.
Angela - I'm the same way! I draw something and hate it. I think that's why I like contour drawings so much - they're supposed to look imperfect. Otherwise, my sketches look like something Napoleon Dynamite would do.
