Future By Design

FutureByDesign

A couple weeks ago Jeremy and I watched the documentary about Jacques Fresco called Future By Design. I haven't been able to get it out of my head since.

The 95-year-old Futurist, Jacque Fresco, completely captured my imagination and my heart. I wish I was smarter just so I could keep up with half the things he talked about in this documentary - homeboy is a genius on a million different levels. His passion and the way he spoke about his vision for the future - it was enough to bring me to tears. And the whole time I was watching this documentary I kept wavering between wanting to live in a Jacque Fresco dome house (so bad it made my heart hurt) and just straight up wanting Jacques Fresco to be my dad. (Not that my dad isn't great - I mean, in a lot of ways ol' Jacque Fresco kind of reminded me of my own dad. They're both smart and have freakishly long arms.)

This film was enough to make me reconsider my own post-apocalyptic fantasy of the future. It inspired me to think of what we can grow into versus our drab demise. And in that case - I may have to reconsider my entire wardrobe. Yeah... it was that good.

Who have you been inspired by lately?

  1. I watched the documentary on Bill Cunningham this summer and walked out a better person. His integrity, his ethics, his grace were palpable. In the world of fashion it's hard to find someone so humble and someone that flow from high society to the streets seamlessly.

I actually used the world "inspirational" when I left the theater, which is a word that I rarely utter. His charm for an old guy is utterly disarming. I left with a desire to see more beauty in everything, not just fashion.

  3. Great to see this on your blog!! I've been following and supporting his work for 3 years. So refreshing to see solutions instead of protests about society.

Are you familiar with the international movement (in more than 100 countries) that he inspired? The Zeitgeist Movement did an amazing documentary featuring Jacque Fresco. Check it out at www.watchaddendum.com

And the website for the movement is www.thezeitgeistmovement.com

  4. That's a good one. I really want to visit his beta town in Florida!

Although I didn't agree with everything and some concepts seemed a little dubious as presented, it also seemed obvious to me that there was so much information that was left out! With such an incredible lifetime body of work... all they could do was surely brush the tip of the iceberg. I imagine some of the things I found doubtful were actually quite sound, and I'd have seen that if they'd had the time to show more info. There were some really cool ideas in there, for sure!

Um... lately I've been feeling too busy and frazzled to find anything new and inspiring, but I think the last documentary I saw that inspired me was Earth Days. Good stuff.

Oh! Wait! I did find Alice DiMicele recently, and I love her, because she sings about happy, important things and spending time outside (for a refreshing change). If you like folksy bluesy music you should consider checking her out, and maybe have a listen to "Damn Lucky Woman." When I have felt frazzled lately, I play her, and feel calmer.

  5. I have actually been quite inspired by Maximus of the movie Gladiator. Now I know that's not a real person, but that movie just touched my heart AGAIN!

  7. Angry Baker - YES. I loved the BCNY documentary. I watched that film with Jeremy and my sister in the theater - as we left my sister couldn't stop crying it was so good.

Kelly - I thought of you as I was watching it! You need to watch it and then visit the Venus Project in Florida.

Jen - He blows my mind - his solutions and vision for EVERYTHING. I've heard a little bit about the Zeitgeist Movement - I had no idea he inspired it! I'll look into it some more.

AMG / Heather - I know - I'm sure they had to pare down a lot of information as to not overwhelm the audience. I was also under the impression that they were just scratching the surface of this man's genius. I'll definitely check out Earth Days and Alice DiMicele. Thanks!

Ramona - I've never seen it! I'll check it out.

;* - OOhhhh - I've been seeing links to this. I need to look at that today.
