My favorite kind of food is Indian food. I die for a good plate of Saag Paneer, Pakora and Samosas with Raita sauce on the side. But when Jeremy first suggested (about a year or two ago) that we try out an Indian food buffet in a gas station I scoffed. And then when I met him at the gas station and saw the really sad used-to-be-a-burger-king floors and the kind of atmosphere that looked like a scene from Natural Born Killers I just about lost my appetite.
But we powered through. I grabbed a paper plate, plastic silverware and styrofoam bowl. I loaded up on hot naan, lentil soup and a curry chock-full of paneer & peas. And you guys - it was the best food I had ever tasted. I ate every last bit. We met up there again yesterday for lunch and noticed they had also opened a little grocery section where I was able to find some hard-to-find Indian spices for my own home cooked meals.
I have it on good authority that this is the most authentic Indian in the city. If you live here or are driving through OKC and you like Indian food you must stop here: Tandoor Restaurant (off MLK and Reno at I-40).
Oh, man! I LOVE finding little joints like that. When we lived in northern California, the VERY BEST Thai place was in the food court of the mall, tucked in among the hideous Sbarro and McDonald's was this 100% authentic, family-owned Thai restaurant.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I want to take a road trip to OK specifically to eat at Tandoor Restaurant now.
Mel - You need to make a trip to Oklahoma specifically to eat with ME at Tandoor. ;)
ReplyDeleteSo excited to see you soon!
You and me both! Usually when I travel internationally, I lose weight but when I spent time in India, I gained close to ten pounds! It's my faaaaaaaaave.
ReplyDeleteI would be skeptical of a roadstop Indian diner as well but looks like it's worth it! Next time I'm in the city, I'm certainly scoping this place out!
I've been passing this place every other Saturday for the last three years and wondered if it was "THE" truck stop. Usually I hit BTT or Mutt's on the way back to Texas, but maybe I'll try this tomorrow! :-)
ReplyDeleteconsidering im feeling nauseous today, its really impressive that im drooling right now. just sayin.

ReplyDeleteIt was the same in India. The worst looking, dive-of-a, hole-in-the-wall kinda place with plastic chairs on the dirt in the parking lot, complete with wild dogs and roaming cows was the BEST place I have ever eaten. I dream about the meals I had there!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely impressive. I am mostly sure I saw this place while driving through OKC on I-40 this summer. I think I used the restroom at this truck stop. I remember the smells of Indian. Feeling like we missed an opportunity. Heh.
ReplyDeleteSounds amazing! My husband and I once ate the most delicious samosas from gas station in Golden, British Columbia. We were on a road trip through the Canadian Rockies and at one of the gas stations, there was a basket of home cooked samosas displayed next to the register, that I couldn't resist. It seemed like a "When in Rome" moment.
ReplyDeleteJust passed through Oklahoma City a couple of weeks ago and so sad I didn't see this post before then. My husband and I love Indian food and on our 30 hour drive from CA to St. Louis it would have been a nice alternative to sitting in stand-still traffic for over 2 hours on the Will Rogers Expwy. Next time around we'll stop there for sure.
