Anatomy of an Outfit: Business Time

Sometimes I give myself a hard time for not being more of a business woman. It could have something to do with the fact that I never wear power suits and I don't belong to a single club with the word "leadership" in it's name. The truth is I don't belong to a single club at all. Or maybe it's because I can't help but make jokes suited for a 14-year-old boy ... in client meetings. And it could have to do with the fact that when I'm not dressing for the movie version of myself fighting some zombies in the post-apocalypse I'm wearing cut-offs and a hot pink bra.

So last Friday I decided to dress the part of business-Kathleen on casual Friday. It meant painting my nails the perfect shade of red (with just a hint of orange) and wearing a shirt with a collar. Even if said shirt is Jeremy's. And I have to tell you - I got a lot of business-y things accomplished. Scripts approved, collaterals designed, happy hour with clients, and a little bit of big picture thinking. But I had a change of clothes and a pair of boots nearby - just in case.

Sweater Vest - Target
Jeremy's Top - Blue 7
Jeans - 1921 (also from Blue 7)
Shoes - Aerosoles
Nails - Essie Lollipop

P.S. If you need a solid pair of jeans and live anywhere near Blue 7 go there. Now.

  1. Can't go wrong with a button-down shirt, and I like that you're wearing Jeremy's.

I would swim in my boyfriend's clothes. He's almost a foot taller than me.

  6. Francine - I love that Jeremy and I are pretty much the same size. His clothes are just the right amount of oversized on me.

    Lauren - It's PERFECT.

Kimberly - Thank you! I felt so put together for being so casual.

Enantiom3r - Haha! I know. It takes pretending like I'm a professional dressing down to dress up.

Jennie - I bet you're super cute. Every day. ;)

  7. I have to tell you something funny... my hubby and I rented the new move "Hanna" at Blockbuster last week and the entire first 30 minutes made me think of you- the fashion, the cabin in the woods, the surviving in a post-apoco world! I was thinking the entire time about your outfits! Ha! : )

  8. The shirt is Jeremy's? It looks super cute on you. I think it definitely helps to dress the part some days. I feel much more confident in meetings with the right dress and a pair of heels on -- and I swear I never accomplish anything of great import in just my pjs. I love this look on you though -- you need to embrace that smart businesswoman you are.

  10. Jessica - Can I admit to you that when I saw Hanna I was totally jealous that I wasn't raised as a badass in an isolated cabin in the arctic? I'm seriously flattered though that you thought of me. That movie has definitely inspired my wardrobe a bit.

Brandi - What can I say ... the man's wardrobe inspires me. And yes. Embracing adventure and business-smarts. YAY.

Erin - When you go ask for Ben! He's the best.

  12. Ok, I can't ever read the phrase "Business Time" without thinking of the Flight of the Conchords' song. If you haven't heard it, you should -- MacKensie introduced me to them. :)

  13. Rachel - I almost considered making this entire post about how I want to make out with Jemaine from Flight of the Conchords ... but I thought it might hurt Jeremy's feelings. All of that to say, yes - me too - I can't say or hear or read "business time" without thinking of FOTC too.

  14. Those shoes. Oh my. Did you find them recently? Might I still be able to hunt them down somewhere?
