On Wearing The Same Jeans for 6 Months
The truth is... I really didn't know what I was in for.
I love a good experiment, so when Blue Seven challenged me to wear the same pair of raw denim jeans for 6 months they didn't have to twist my arm to do it. I enthusiastically volunteered. And just to be clear ... I'm not being paid to do this. I suppose I just really liked the idea of streamlining my wardrobe. I've been toying with the idea of having a uniform in order to make less (mundane) choices so I can save my brain power for more life-changing-world-rocking decisions.
Two days into the challenge I noticed that the front pockets on my denim kept coming up out of the pocket hole. It wasn't until 6 weeks later I had my mom sew them down – something I should have done much sooner. Those little annoyances can really add up. And four weeks in I unexpectedly started my period wearing these jeans – I've never dashed for a bathroom faster. A blood stain in a pair of jeans you can't wash for 6 months is not cool. Over Christmas break I was playing Cards Against Humanity with my family and laughed so hard I almost peed myself. Again. You don't want to have any bodily liquid accidents in raw denim you've committed to wearing everyday and not washing for 6 months.
I just never thought it all the way through. But I'm glad I'm doing it. There's nothing cooler than making new friends at the coffee shop when you see someone else sporting the Clean Start leather badge on their jeans (not pictured - but we got this leather belt loop with the clean start logo on it). There's solidarity and community in it. I also love the simplicity of not thinking about what I'm going to wear every single day. It makes me want to trim my wardrobe even further. We can do so much more with less.
I've now been rocking these jeans for 3 months. Half-way there. I'm surprised at how well the jeans are holding their shape. In some ways I wish I was getting more signs of wear and tear – but I still have 3 more months to go.
Here are some other looks from the 2 month shoot that I'm digging:
Sara, Matt, and Stella are the cutest little family. They own a little grocery store & deli downtown that is dedicated to locally-sourced produce and they have the most amazing spice bar ever. I'm there so often, I should probably apply for a part-time job. We even did a creative entrepreneur feature on them as the modern day mom and pop business over at Braid. Check that out here.
I don't know Matt but I love how he's rocking the paint. I can't wait to see how his raw denim evolves over the next few months. He inspires me to live a little more in my own jeans.
For not really knowing him that well, Ben is one of my favorite people. He works in the denim department at Blue Seven and just knows his stuff. He tweets to me when a new pair of jeans comes in that he thinks I'll like. And when I do go in he remembers my size (but not in a creepy way). He's super friendly and has a great eye for style. He also keeps Jeremy company when I'm trying on my 30th pair of jeans.
You might recognize Jacob as the boy model from the photo shoot we modeled in together for Shop Good. He is notoriously good at breaking in raw denim. I like to imagine him rolling down grassy hills on the daily in order to get them beat up like that.
For more shots from the Blue Seven Clean Start Project check out the rest of the photos here.
I don't think I could handle that. I really hate the feeling my jeans get after about the third or fourth day. However, these are just gap jeans and not raw denim! Maybe that makes a difference?
ReplyDeleteInteresting!
ReplyDeleteThere is a similar one called the Uniform Project, where you wear a versatile black dress every day for a year in whatever combo you like. I once considered trying it but decided it would probably not be culturally acceptable in my work place... more on this at
http://www.theuniformproject.com/
Wow! I'm really amazed at how well these have held up. Especially in the butt area - not that I was checking out anyone's butt ;) That's the first place on my jeans that start looking like sag bags. You all look great!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, bodily fluids are probably best avoided. I laughed out loud at the period part because I've made some mad dashes in the past as well.
Keep it up!!!

I still don't really get it but you look fabulous so who cares.
ReplyDeleteYou aren't getting paid!? I find jeans so miserably uncomfortable I hardly ever wear them anymore, so when I think about you doing this, I imagine you locked into a torture device, like a chastity belt! Maybe I just have bad jeans.
ReplyDeleteAlso, thank you, because just yesterday Jeff accused me of being the only person who ever says "I laughed so hard I almost peed myself." I was trying to convince him it is a thing.
Whenever I wear the same pair of jeans for more than two or three days in a row, they get all stretched out, and I get that dreaded "saggy ass" look. But your fine ass still looks great!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Like Francine, I'm a bit confused about the purpose of this exercise. Is it to save water?
OBSESSED. My husband has a pair of Nudie jeans that he wore 2-4 times/week and didn't wash for a year and a half. Two years later and he's only washed them twice. He has them on right now; they look great.
ReplyDeleteQuestion about the Blue Seven challenge- do you all wear the same brand of raw denim, or does everyone pick a style and brand that suits them best? Also, curious to know the brand you're wearing. I've had my eye on a pair of raw denim for a while but haven't locked in on a particular brand yet... Anyway, happy weekend!
Kim - I'm not sure... I think if you hate the way your jeans feel after 3 or 4 days it would be the same with raw denim. If not more so.
ReplyDeleteAlien Mind Girl - YES! Love the uniform project. So inspiring.
Andrew and Crystal - I know! I'm surprised at the butt not sagging too.
Francine and Nicole - The purpose isn't to save water. It's a raw denim thing. See here for more information: http://www.highsnobiety.com/2012/11/27/a-beginners-guide-to-raw-denim/
Chelsey - YES. Peeing your pants whilst laughing is a very real thing. Maybe it's just a girl thing?
Kate - Everyone picks a different style (or some may pick the same). The brand I'm wearing is SkarGorn. I would probably choose Nudies if I had to do it again.
Thanks, Kathleen! Very cool.
ReplyDeleteYes! I love this. And I love seeing how the jeans are progressing. Thanks for the update!
ReplyDeleteI think you'd be really interested in EDC culture (ever day carry). For someone who wants to create a "uniform" (an idea that I totally love), you'd appreciate the importance of investing in quality gear and keeping essential items with you at all times. Check out http://everyday-carry.com/.
ReplyDeleteThis is so inspiring Kathleen. I too would love to live more simply...in fact that is one of my goals for this year, and well for life in general. I have accumulated SO....much...stuff over the years, holy moly do I have a lot of stuff!! And a lot of clothes at that, I would love to cut back on what I buy and also donate a lot that I don't wear as well. PLUS I'd love to find great denim like all of the ones in the photo....we don't have that brand in Canada :(
ReplyDeleteYou are my favourite.
ReplyDeleteAlso...I included you in one of my recent blog posts, hope that's alright!

AngelaBeth - I wish they were even more worn in! We'll see how they are at Month 4.
ReplyDeleteA Story Unravels - Checking it out now! Thanks! I've committed to only buying quality (over quantity) and making sure that my clothes and accessories will last for years and perhaps even decades.
Miss Teacups - You can do it! Just toss and don't look back. I promise you won't regret it. Okay... maybe sometimes you'll have a tinge of regret when you realize you got rid of the perfect top for a party but the feeling of having less outweighs that.
Also, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this brand. There are lots of really great denim designers out there using quality materials. XO
I'm tempted to claim I'm doing something similar with a favourite item just to take the hassle out of figuring what to wear every day. Is life easier having the bottom half decided for you or is it more difficult to always figure out something that goes with?
ReplyDeleteHappy N.Y by the way! (I have scarf envy and have done since I saw your Instagram, just thought I'd drop that in...) xx
i so wish i could wear jeans at work. if i could, i think i would be happy wearing the same ones for six month. today, i could not remember if i had already worn my current shirt this week or not. i opt for not or at least not yesterday and wore it. i would like to not have to think so hard about clothes. :)
ReplyDeleteI bet Matt could sell his jeans after the 6 months for a considerable amount. I saw something online (I can't remember where, pinterest probably) with a collage of people wearing paint stained jeans (like designer jeans trying to look cool).
ReplyDeleteI like to wash my jeans (ha!). My boyfriend never does because they won't fit his quadzilla legs afterwards.
Keep on keeping on, girl.
