Anatomy of an Outfit | Rock What You've Got

So ... I accidentally donated most of my summer clothes this winter as I was going through my Great Wardrobe Purge. I may have been a little shortsighted in feeling like the seasons would never change. I felt as if I would be stuck in winter forever. But spring is finally here (though, you wouldn't know it from the freezing temperatures, rain and ice we got last night.) As we ease our way into summer I'm tempted to restock my closet with more shorts, tanks and bikinis.

But the thing is... I know I'll end up wearing the same thing I've worn for the past two summers since becoming my own boss. It's the outfit I've already got: my old cutoffs, my favorite belt that I co-opted from Jeremy, the same grey American Apparel tank I've had for years, and my trusty cowboy boots (c/o Langston's Western Wear – the official sponsor of Urban Cowgirl Summer 2012).

It's tempting to replace everything I've got with something more ethical, more handmade in the USA, and more fair trade. But that would be like trading in my perfectly nice Volkswagen for a Prius. Doing the right thing may mean rocking (and accessorizing) what I've already got.

  1. Does that mean you're done wearing the jeans every day?

  3. ha, sounds like something I'd do. when I'm done, I'm DONE...and can't imagine feeling any other way. Except then there are other moments.

isn't it funny how we think we need a million options, but in the end, most of us up grabbing the same few things -- what we feel good in.

  4. Henna - I relegated everything I found myself not wearing to one side of the wardrobe and if it sat there unused for any length of time, I got rid of it. I found myself (as you say) wearing the same thing over and over so resolved to figure out the formula of those outfits and get a couple more but mostly be happy that there wasn't a lot of choice mangling my mind first thing in the morning!

Kathleen - I'm not sure about your VW for Prius analogy. The VW is day-by-day damaging the earth more than a Prius would, the clothes have already impacted and now need to be used as much as possible to offset that damage (and so the longer you keep them, the less their environmental cost), to me it seems like the total opposite things? You could argue that to scrap a perfectly good car would be more damaging (in terms of producing the new one before the end life of old etc) than the good you would use transferring to a new more eco-friendly car? The mind boggles trying to do the right thing.
