This is 31

31

This last Sunday I turned 31. Unlike 30 I didn't want to celebrate and I wasn't feeling so hot-to-trot about turning another year older. Not because I hate the idea of getting old necessarily ... but ever since that day when I internalized the 80s hit Forever Young I've been hyper aware of my own mortality (we're all going to die!) and feeling like there just isn't enough time (so what's the point?). I also have this idea that at 31 I need to put the party to rest. Or maybe I was just wanting to have a lazy Sunday – which is how I like to celebrate every Sunday.

Instead of getting completely cozy with my morbid thoughts and becoming a total birthday bummer, I decided to spend my day doing yoga, planting some decorative grass my sister got me for my birthday, watching a documentary about artist Wayne White called Beauty is Embarrassing (more on that later), feasting with friends around my dining room table, and watching the newest episode of Game of Thrones.

Hello, 31. I'm not sure I'm quite ready for you but I'm here for you.

  5. Happy Birthday!!! 30 wasn't a tough pill for me to swallow, but now that I'm pushing 37, and I haven't had kids yet, and the plans are all different (because i keep changing them) I get a bit freaked out.

I am not using the "common cookie cutter" plan for life, and I love that you don't either.

Cheers to the 30's you're going to rock them, I know it!

  6. That picture only serves to confirm you are so BadAss!

Happy (belated) birthday! Whether you celebrate lazily or loudly, I suggest never ever "putting the party away." No matter your age, it is *always* an option :-)

  9. Happy belated birthday!

I think it depends what kind of party you are talking about. I personally feel all of that is just starting. The kiddos are old enough to be taking camping (which we L.O.V.E but haven't braved with them -yet) and I'm finally starting to get to grips with my dual personality life (mama by day, me/entrepreneur by night). I feel like the good stuff is just beginning and the rest of time so far was spent training, gathering the knowledge, skills and grace to live magnificently.

I'm hitting 31 in August and am not overly enamoured with the fact but I'm looking on the passing of 30 as the end of training and 31 as The Start of my magnificent being. You've had some pretty impressive training grounds this far Missy, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that 31 will be The Start of lots of great things for you.

I did a recent post on my blog (alfies-studio.com) about narrative and there is a quote in there taken from a film called Big Fish (if you haven't seen it, you should) that has inspired me to live life brilliantly. Ed Bloom is my hero. Lets all be big fishes.

  12. Happy birthday, beautiful you. I watched Beauty Is Embarrassing a few weeks ago and have been meaning to write about it, but I think I'll just link to your post. I'm sure it would be the same since, you know, we're soul sisters. :) xoxo

  17. I just turned 32 at the end of April and I felt similarly. I loved turning 30 and I was pretty excited for 31. It's the 2's that always leave me feeling a bit existential. I'm glad you listened to your spirit and did what felt right. Every birthday is a little different.

You are a pretty awesome chica, and I have no doubt that this next year will hold great things in store for you.

    hugs,

    soleil

  18. Ooops. Late commenting, again. But Happy Birthday, it sounds like it was brilliant. I turned 31 in February... it was my best birthday ever, I think. But I am also having a little bit of a challenge with the 31 thing... a first for me. So far there have been a lot of jokes about being Boring Old People. But seriously, I'm also glad some of the training wheel years are over. Let's make the 30s better than the 20s, shall we?

  19. Happy belated, Kathleen. I hope to see your 31 year old self in Durham sometime soon. Also, on my 31st birthday in January, I found out I was pregnant. So... so far, 31 is fucking amazing.

  20. You're the hottest 31 year old I've ever seen.
BTW, I think your hair lady has NAILED the blonde in your locks perfectly lately. It's lookin so fly for summer time. Love you, boo. xoxox
