We probably put a little more into this kitchen than we could get back, especially in today's market, but that's okay. We did it for ourselves and we're going to live here forever.
What we did:
• Ripped out the old cabinets
• Installed new custom-built cabinets
• Installed glass panels in cabinet doors
• Ripped out peninsula and patched floor
• Installed new countertop
• Installed tile backsplash
• Painted, painted, painted
• Installed new lighting (overhead and cabinet)
• Installed new venthood
What we kept:
• Stove
• Dishwasher
• Floor tile
Things I learned:
• Custom cabinets are not much more expensive than the pre-fab store bought but the quality is night and day.
• If you can afford it hire a painter. If you can't afford invest in a paint sprayer.
• Leave some things up to the pros - like tiling.
• When you do your family favors (like babysit) they'll usually return them (by installing cabinet lighting). It's the cheapest way to get things done.
• Everything is going to take twice as long and cost twice as much as you expect it too.
What we have left:
• Grout patched tile on floor (can you believe we still haven't done this!?)
I love the part about learn to trade babysitting for manual labor.
