Walking to Work

Confession:
There are some days when I never step outside. Not even once. Or on less extreme days I might not go outside until after work.

Another Confession: I spend over 2 hours easing in to my day. That means I wake up at 6:15 AM and don't sit down to start working until 8:30. During that time I'm doing nothing but sip on coffee while browsing through my RSS feed and perusing Pinterest. It's a luxury I don't take for granted.

But this morning I decided I needed a change of pace. Before I left my full time job to take the leap into freelance I would walk 3 miles to work a few days each week. I always felt so accomplished and alive even before I started my day. So this morning I went for a walk. I strapped on my feety-shoes and walked out the door, down the street, around the park, past my dream house and down sunny roads. I said "Good Morning" to every single person I passed by. And when I circled around back home and walked through my door I found myself at work. Already feeling so accomplished. Good morning, indeed.

  1. Love the light on these pictures! I too most of the time don't go out AT ALL during the day. !
Just reading this makes me plan for a little bit of working at the Art Center of my town. Yup, with a nice tea.
    Have a good one!

  2. I've been trying to take more walks in the morning. It is hard working freelance and getting that extra workout in that you would have had commuting. It's so worth it though!

  3. Enjoy the walks. I'd go nuts if I couldn't get outside at least a little bit every day. That's why my lunch hour means I eat lunch at my desk while I'm working and then use the hour to walk around the city.

  4. I like this.

    And the term "feety-shoes."

  5. Love the idea of walking to work when you work at home. Gonna keep that in mind - I'm sure my dog would appreciate it too :)

  7. sounds like you just confirmed my curious thoughts... I've been wanting to wake up... strap on my shoes and grab the dog and go for a walk around our neighborhood each AM to wake up and clear my mind for the day... I will do this soon!

  8. I love this post. And those photos make me so nostalgic for Crown Heights.

I totally appreciate easing in to the workday. I think a good day's work requites babysteps (nyuk nyuk nyuk!)

  9. Exercise really does do wonders! I now usually go to the gym in the afternoons when I'm hitting that afternoon lull and want to sleep. I feel so fantastic afterwards AND I completely crash out when it's time to go to bed. Ha ha I was always so anti exercise... why didn't anybody ever tell me how amazing it is?!

  10. That's so awesome! I love morning strolls. I just started walking to work myself, and I absolutely love starting my day with my legs still all tingly from hoofin' it. :)

  11. Rory - I feel like my next house will be down the street in Crown Heights.

Dashfield Vintage - You know! It's funny because I had to force myself to not start running. I wanted to approach this morning walk more as a time to have white space around my day vs. "exercise" - though I do like to hit the gym after work as a way to decompress and transition back OUT of work. So wait!? Why were you anti-exercise!?

  12. I love this. It's incredible what stepping out the door can do. I often wonder if I'll still walk so much someday when I don't have Daphnie (out of habit and because I love how refreshing it is.)

  13. The photos from your morning walk make it seem like it was absolutely divine! What a great idea! I had the same problem when I worked from home.

Last year when I was living in France, I loved that I lived a five minute walk from my work. I love being able to walk to work. Now, my commute is a 10 minute walk, 15 minute passenger ferry and a final 15 minute walk.

  14. I like that you ease in to each day. I'm trying that out this morning and I'm hoping it will help start my days refreshed and excited to accomplish things. Not walking this morning, but there's something about outside that really seems to help you feel centered and focused, don't you think?

  15. The light in these shots makes this walk seem like a dream. I can so see you living in that dream house. When I see it, I think that's her house, right? :)

  18. I'm the same way about waiting up to two hours on the Internet before I start working. I'm going to start walking to work at home too.
