About the Dreadlocks

If you've been following me on Instagram (@andkathleen) you may have already caught a peek at my dreadlocks in progress. For a little over 3 weeks I've been working many hours a day on dreading my hair. I only lost sleep one night over them - I was being completely neurotic about botching my hair and never looking like Sarah Jessica Parker. Ever. I was only half a dozen dreadlocks in at this point - so in the middle of the night I asked Jeremy what he truly thought about them. I was looking for an out but he told me to stick with it. So I did - and I'm glad.

On that note, a lot of people ask me what Jeremy thinks about them. I'm not sure yet. You see, he's privy to the hours and hours of twisting, ripping, crochet-hooking - the dreads are more of a time-suck hobby than a hairstyle to him at this point. But regardless, Jeremy has never been the kind of guy to have negative feelings about how I wear my hair.

Mostly we joke about them. For example, when I asked Jeremy if he wanted to go see a Bob Marley documentary at a local film festival he asked me if "this was a dread thing." NO. I just happen to really like documentaries and want to be involved in my local art community. Or the other day I was cooking up some tilapia and veggies in a bikini with my dreads down. I told Jeremy I felt very tropical. Like I we should be on an island. That's when he responded with "You mean, Jamaica?" And we both had a good laugh when the cats tried burrowing in my hair in the middle of the night (gross, right?) - I quickly put a stop to that.

So, as my dreads grow so do the questions about them. I'll answer a few here:
• Are they permanent?
Kind of. People who have had dreads for years have been able to brush them out with lots and lots of work. But I imagine when I don't want dreads anymore I'll just cut all my hair off short.
• Are they real?
It's all real - but it's not all mine. I'm actually dreading my hair. Then I'm dreading hair extensions (made out of human hair - so I have the option to dye them later) and weaving the extensions into my dreads. So it's actually really rad to all of a sudden have hair down to my butt.
• Can you wash them?
Yes. I wash mine once a week (which is about how often I washed my hair when I didn't have dreads). I use a residue-free shampoo followed up by spraying them down with lemon juice (to help them lock up).
• How long does it take to make them?
On average, I've been completing about 2 dreadlocks a day. Each take about 30 minutes. However, it takes months and months for them to mature and lock up. I keep reading about how awful the first 4 months are because they're kind of a loose hot mess until then. (I devoured this girl's YouTube stream to learn how to make & extend my dreads).
• You mean you have to make them? I thought you got dreads by just not washing / touching your hair.
I wish. They're are some people who use the "neglect" method. I'm not one of them.
• Can you wear them down?
I mostly wear them up in public because I'm still in the process of completing them. Once I'm done with all my extensions I'll be able to wear my hair in lots of different styles including down.
• What does your mother think?
My mom thinks I'm beautiful no matter what. (She taught me to marry a man with the same attitude - and I did).

The most surprising thing that I didn't expect was the feeling of claustrophobia I get from not being able to freely run my fingers through my scalp. It's almost like a sensory deprivation thing. And another surprising thing is the amount of strangers who react to my hair with compliments and curiosity. I even had one girl at a Sephora counter tell me that she's always wanted dreads but could never commit. Which brings me to this: It's just hair. Feel free to ask me questions and I'll answer in the comments.

I'm curious - when it comes to your hair do you like to switch it up or do you have a signature standby? Would you ever do dreads?

  1. I find this topic fascinating. You answered so many questions I've been pondering so thank you for that! I do still wonder though if it's uncomfortable to sleep on?

I'm such a wimp with my own hair - in fact, because I live in Gabon where I can't go to a 'nice' salon, I just don't cut my hair. It's been a year since I've had a good cut. I know, it's silly.

  2. Jay - They are a little uncomfortable to sleep on because A) I'm getting used to sleeping with long hair - sometimes I try and roll over but have hair pinned under my back. and B) the actual dreads are kind of scratchy right now. But I'm quickly getting used to it.

  3. Has anyone made any "cultural appropriation" comments to you? Like "Why are you, a white girl, trying so hard to make your hair look like a black girl's? When that's obviously not what your hair wants to do?"

I did my BA at a suuuuper PC, hippie college and some of the white kids would
    a) get that response when they got dreads
    b) be the ones who said that

    Just curious!

  4. this is so weird but my stomach totally clenched up when u mentioned the claustrophobia thing. I can totally feel what it must be like.

Can't wait to see them in person! And I think I would have gotten bored halfway through making them. Way to finish the job :) (or almost finish?)

  5. Sarah Von - I haven't received any of those comments but I do think about it. If I were to do absolutely nothing with my hair the thing it would most naturally do on it's own is dread itself.

Here's the deal - with any hair style - whether it's straight or in a perfectly messy top-knot none of it is doing it on its own. My hair obviously doesn't want to be subjected to bleach and flat irons but nobody seems to have a problem with that. People of ALL races subject their hair to pretty unnatural things in order to make it look one way or another. I don't see how what I'm doing is any different.

I think more than anything I feel weird about using the term "dreads" but my intentions aren't to be offensive or racist so I don't worry about it.

Emily - YES - the feeling goes straight to my stomach too! I'm about 6 or so extensions away from being done! They'll definitely be finished by the time I see you.

  6. Can I just say... I LOVE that you have dreads. LOVE.

Did you use any horse hair in making them? I thought I'd seen you mention that?

Another great resource is the GUDU community on LiveJournal. http://get-up-dread-up.livejournal.com/

Especially their memories section, which is well maintained by @lishd:
    http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=get_up_dread_up

And in case you encounter any small minded people who think dreads on white people are an example of cultural appropriation (they can be, but they can also not be, depending on how you act), you can check out the "Q: White people with dreads?:" section of the memories on GUDU.

All hair types dread when you don't wash/brush them. Some Vikings had dreadlocks to scare the enemy! It's theorized that John the Baptist in the Bible had dreads.

Anyways, sorry for this novel of a comment. I think you're just great. :)

  7. AndresandCandice - Thank you for your comment and for the link! It's cool that vikings had dreadlocks - I have some Scandinavian roots, myself. Also, I've noticed a lot of Swedish girls with dreads when I'm doing a little bit of perusing Instagram for dread images.

  8. You look amazing with them girl!! I ADORE them on you!!

  9. I've been thinking about my hair today. It's short now, but I kept it long for years and I'm kind of missing it. The part that sucks is the in-between, "Stop looking at it! I'm growing it out!" phase. I need to figure out what to do with it in the meantime. Or I may just chop it off again. Who knows? :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Miss Teacups - XO!

Melanie - As a girl who is constantly chopping all her hair off I can so relate. Here's the deal - stop cutting length off but get it cut often. Sounds counter-intuitive, I know. But the more you can have it trimmed into a "style" the less you'll feel like you're just growing it out.

  11. I love them and think you look hot!!

  12. Your dreads look amazing! I considered doing the same last summer but I never have the patience to even get my hair past my shoulders. It gets a little long and I chop it off into a faux hawk. I don't like to have to spend time styling it in the morning, which I suppose you won't have to do a whole lot of if you don't want to! They look great!

    ReplyDelete
  13. You look good with the knotty hair :) I have been thinking/wanting dreads for a couple of years now but my hair doesn't have much length. I haven't looked into the extensions yet but you have inspired me to do so!

    ReplyDelete
  14. First, you look great in dreads! I once wanted dreads, back in high school, and while my parents were very free about letting me do whatever I wanted to it, my mother was a big heck to the no on dreads so I wore my hair in many, many braids instead.

I used to do all sorts of crazy things to my hair with colors and cuts, but lately I've stuck to the same ole' same ole...after reading this, I think it's time to mix it up a bit!

  15. I think you should meet my good friend Phil and his dreads... they have their own facebook account: http://www.facebook.com/phils.dreads

p.s. I love that you kept your bangs out of your dreads. It helps keep the look somewhat feminine. Very pretty.

  16. They're so so gorgeous. I've wanted dreads since college, but I don't think they match my personal style, so people would be like, "hey girl wearing pearls, wtf is up with the dreads?"

Question: does your head feel heavier now with all that extra hair?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Until you, I didn't realize dreads took so much work. You're rocking them! Come to Durango and you'll fit right in. ;)

  18. i think you look great.

15 years ago when i lived in oregon, i let my hair go to dread naturally, but i did wash it everyday, because my scalp is oily and if i didn't it would have taken much longer. i just washed it then slept on it and before it began to dread it just got HUGE! i started with really long hair, i have some old photos of "in process" and it looks like a lions mane, hilarious.

so, cut to 4 months later and i moved to the caribbean, and definitely in and out of the salt water everyday, those puppies knotted right up, tightly! the only real maintenance i did was to separate the huge masses, but in the end i had really big dreads, like 1" diameter.

they were really fun, and totally defined me at that time in my life, the only drawback was that i lived in st. john and i was "the female white dread" and everyone called me rasta and not that i had a problem with that, but i was not rasta, it was simply a hairstyle.

anyway, they look great on you. and as an aside, i cut off most of my hair, then put conditioner in the remainder and combed it out to where i had a short bob.

    enjoy!
    and love your blog, thanks!

  19. I have naturally curly hair also (staci_renae on instagram) and my hair starts to dread after like a week if I don't touch it (like if I have the flu or a hospital stay- that one was funny) but my fear of commitment extends to my hair hahah.

  20. When I was married I had long hair, which is a style that never suited me. When I got divorced, I got the most awesome a-line with the nape shaved! Then I got sick and had to shave my head which meant I finally got to rock the mohawk I've always wanted. I'm getting a little bored with it (styling takes way more time and product than long hair ever did!), so I'm trying to figure out if I want to grow it out once more and cut it short again when I go gray? According to my mom, that'll be another 10-15 years though...But I love having a unique hairstyle. Your dreads look so fantastic! I really like how you kept the bangs.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I had no idea you had that many now! (Not on instagram yet, no smart phone... 3 more days!!!) :) But girl they look amazing! SJP wishes she could do this to her hair.

I can't wait to see the progression and finished product!

  22. Jeremy doesn't care because he secretly lusts after Bob Marley and/or he knows you will change it again within a year.

  23. Love 'em! Have wanted 'em for awhile!

Were the extensions pricey? My hair is medium length now and would definitely need some length.

  24. My friend was just starting his dreads and we talked to an old Jamaican man who recommended using pineapple juice once a week in place of lemon to help them lock up. He said he sprays it in the day before he is going to wash them. It makes your hair smell awesome, and it seems to be working!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I had no idea dreads could be so pretty. I never would have considered them, but yours look so neat!
I have super-thick straight hair that I've grown to my waist and donated twice. My favorite style ever was a pixie, but I missed my long locks. So it's back to the awkward grow-out stage again. When it gets to the middle of my back I'm going to do some "rainbow" colors.

    ReplyDelete
  26. When it comes to hair - I agree - it's just hair. If it wasn't for my job I would probably do more with mine. For a while it was really dull, and then a couple of weeks ago I got a new "mom" haircut which is asymetrical and short and awesome. When I was younger and had a job where people didn't care about my hair, I changed it constantly including the color, and wish I could do that again. Hair was just a fun accessory for me.

  27. I would love to be more daring with my hair, but I have a tendency to throw it up in a bun or a ponytail because I don't like having it in my face. The most daring I've been is with hair color. Mine's a beautiful reddish/purple right now.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh interesting I didn't realize you added extensions. Do they give you headaches from the tightness or weight of them on your head?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I LOVE it!!! I didnt know you could do it with extensions!?? hmmmm, i've always wanted to grow my hair out to do dreads, but never could reach a length needed. You've given me hope!! (not sure they'd look as great on me as they do you though!!!)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think your hair looks great! If I ever had dreadlocks I don't think I'd add any extensions since my hair is so thick. It would probably weigh my head down too much. They seem like an easy style once you create all the locks. I change my mind too much to get dreads. I'm afraid I'd like them for a little while then get tired of them and I look better with longer hair, so cutting my hair off short wouldn't work. Same reason I've never gotten a tattoo. I don't know if I'd like it long term.

    ReplyDelete
  31. They look so good on you! When my hair was short I'd change the color all the time without a care at all. But after being red for over 5 years, when I finally decided to go black it was surprisingly nerve wracking.

    ReplyDelete
  32. You look awesome with this kind of hair! I always wanted to have dreads, but well my hair seems not approiate...

    ReplyDelete
  33. Stefanie - My head feels a little heavier with the reads but not a whole lot. It's more like overall pressure at my scalp from the dreads - if that makes sense.

Ann - I wish I had a sea to dip my hair in everyday! That's really awesome.

Jennie - No, I don't get headaches but the tightness of them does make me wish I could run my fingers through my scalp.

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback! I'm pleasantly surprised.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Midwest Drawl - I didn't look for the best deal when it comes to extensions but rather convenience. I got a whole head worth of hair at Sally Beauty Supply (Sassy was the brand in 14") for $90. It turns out I needed TWO of those! So I spent almost $200 on extensions - but I figure that's the cost of not even two cut and colors so it'll even out after a few months.

  35. You look awesome! A very ballsy move from a very ballsy lady.

    ReplyDelete
  36. When The Voice was on, one of the singers had long dreads, as did her mom. Her mom's front part of her scalp was nearly bald from the weight (I'm assuming?) of the dreads. I didn't like looking at that; it made me uncomfortable, mostly because it's a reminder of my own thinning hair (not from dreads, though!).

But, all the power to ya! It's not a look I could pull off and I've never had the desire for them, either.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I had dreads briefly when I turned twenty. I had a botched hairstyle from the salon so I decided dreading was better. I LOVED them. I took them out when I split up with my then-boyfriend, and had short to shoulder length hair until two years ago when I shaved my head. I told myself I would grow it out as long as I could and then put some dreads back in. You're an inspiration.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I imagine you could easily pull off a shaved head too when the time comes or a very short cut!

My go to is a pony tail, my first reaction is to blame it on lack of time because of my small kiddo's but the truth is I hate hair around my face and if I was brave enough I would shave my head! ha ha But I am currently favouring a messy, braided bunch to one side of my head! 80's revival yeah

  39. wow, i dont know how i have to say this hehe...but with that hair i can see the changing of your character. anyway, i follow your blogs (yes, i love what u do!)and i'm still trying to figure out who you are. and yet i find that you are so ...inspiring ^_^

  40. shocking for me, i follow your blog and i do love your work and your creativity sight. frankly i like you and straight messy hair. i have some friends who wear their hair like you. it's a new conditions that you have to adapt. when i see your image on that hair style, you look a bit rough hehe.. but anyway, you are so brave K ^_^

  42. I just had mine done as well... I'm still in week one. Had extensions put in and mine look almost exactly like yours. Does this get less itchy (???!!!)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Jessica - It definitely gets less itchy! Go for a while without washing or getting wet - but once you do here is my formula that works great for itchiness:

10-15 drops of tea tree oil
    1 tbs. baking powder
1 tbs. residue free shampoo (from DreadHeadHQ)

Mix all of this together in an applicator bottle (something the size of a ketchup bottle - you can get at a beauty supply store) - mix with water and apply to your roots. Wash and rinse. The tea tree oil definitely helps with the itch.

  46. Hi! I just came across this link in a Google search and I would LOVE to know more about how you dreaded with extentions. I cut my dreads awhile back and now my hair is too short for me to be comfortable dreading alone. I have been looking everywhere with someone who has done this and you are all I have found. 47. How did you do them? What did you put in your hair and how exactly did you do the dreads?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Arlette - I did the twist and rip method. I didn't put anything in them. I took a chunk of my hair and would twist and rip from the bottom to my scalp. Now they just form on their own and do their own thing.
